Sherwood SR2 Regulator: A Balanced Piston First Stage Built for Serious Recreational Divers

The Sherwood SR2 is a complete first and second stage regulator set, designed around a genuinely pneumatically balanced piston first stage.

If you are a recreational diver who logs regular dives and wants a regulator with real engineering behind it, not just marketing language, the SR2 is worth understanding closely.

Why "Truly Balanced" Actually Matters

You have probably seen the word "balanced" on regulator spec sheets before. It gets used loosely.

Most balanced piston regulators use a knife-edge sealing surface on the piston. That edge wears down over time, and as it does, the pneumatic balance degrades. You end up with a regulator that was balanced when new but drifts in performance as the hours accumulate.

Sherwood addressed this directly in the SR2. They developed a two-piece piston design that increases the sealing diameter without relying on a knife edge. The result is a first stage that maintains its balance as the seals wear, rather than losing it.

In practical terms, this means the regulator responds consistently to your breathing demand regardless of the tank pressure dropping throughout a dive. You should not notice it working harder as the cylinder empties.

The Dry Spring Chamber

Standard piston regulators allow water into the main spring cavity. Over time, that water introduces salt, sediment, and other contaminants that affect the spring and the internal surfaces.

The SR2 uses a sealed dry spring chamber. Water does not enter. This keeps the internal mechanism cleaner between services and helps the regulator hold its calibration longer between servicing intervals.

If you dive in the ocean regularly, this is a meaningful design choice, not just a convenience feature.

First Stage Ports and Hose Routing

The SR2 first stage is built from marine-grade chrome-plated brass and gives you a practical port layout:

All five LP ports sit on a 360-degree swivel, which means you can orient hoses cleanly regardless of whether you dive with a BCD that routes hoses on the right or the left. Two HP ports give you room for a primary pressure gauge and a transmitter if you use an air-integrated dive computer.

The SR2 is nitrox compatible up to 40% oxygen straight out of the box, with no additional cleaning or certification required. That covers the vast majority of recreational nitrox blends used for extended no-decompression diving.

Second Stage: One Adjustment, Two Functions

The SR2 second stage uses a pneumatically balanced valve with what Sherwood calls a SMART demand lever and floating crown. The floating crown design extends seat life, which is the valve seat that controls airflow when you inhale.

The second stage has a single control knob that handles two functions simultaneously:

• Venturi setting (Dive/Pre-Dive): Controls the internal airflow assist. Pre-dive reduces the chance of free-flow at the surface; Dive opens up the venturi effect to support easier breathing underwater.
• Inhalation resistance: Lets you adjust how much effort it takes to trigger airflow, so you can tune the breathing feel to your preference.

The fact that both adjustments happen through a single knob in one motion is a genuine usability decision. There is no secondary dial to hunt for mid-dive. The knob is also sized and positioned for gloved hands, which matters if you dive in cold water with thick gloves.

The second stage body is made from glass-filled polyamide, a reinforced plastic that keeps the second stage light in the water. Sherwood describes the in-water feel as weightless, which reflects that material choice.

Who the SR2 Is Right For

This regulator suits a recreational diver who dives with some regularity and wants a first stage with a legitimate engineering advantage over entry-level balanced regulators. The dry spring chamber and the two-piece piston design are not cosmetic differences; they affect long-term performance and service intervals.

The 40% nitrox limit covers standard recreational enriched air diving without any additional preparation.

If you are a technical diver running high-oxygen mixes above 40%, or diving with multiple stages and needing more than five LP ports, the SR2 is not configured for that use. And if you are a complete beginner buying your very first regulator, the SR2's adjustability and port count may be more than you need right now, though it would not hold you back as you develop.
