What You Are Getting

A regulator is the piece of equipment that takes high-pressure air from your tank and delivers it to you at a pressure you can comfortably breathe. It has two main parts: the first stage, which attaches to the tank valve, and the second stage, the part you put in your mouth.

The MC9-SC/Compact Pro pairs a balanced diaphragm first stage with a compact, lightweight second stage. Both stages are built and certified in Italy to the European cold-water standard, which is one of the more demanding benchmarks a recreational regulator can carry.

The First Stage: Balanced and Cold-Water Sealed

The term "balanced" matters here. In an unbalanced regulator, breathing resistance increases as the tank pressure drops over the course of a dive. A balanced design keeps that resistance consistent from a full tank to a near-empty one.

For a new diver, this is reassuring: your regulator breathes the same way at the end of the dive as it did at the start.

The first stage also uses a Sealed Chamber (SC) cold-water system. In cold water, moisture can freeze inside an unsealed first stage, potentially causing a freeflow (where air rushes out uncontrolled). The sealed design isolates the internal mechanism from the surrounding water, greatly reducing that risk. This is what earns the MC9-SC/Compact Pro its cold-water certification for use below 10°C (50°F).

The body of the first stage is chromium-plated brass with internal components in stainless steel, chromium-plated brass, and thermoplastic resins. It is built to handle a maximum tank pressure of 232 bar (3,365 PSI), which covers standard recreational cylinders worldwide.

The Hyperbalanced Mechanism: Why It Matters Near the End of a Dive

Cressi calls this a "hyperbalanced" design, which refers to a specific tuning of the intermediate pressure (the pressure between the first and second stage). As tank pressure falls toward the end of a dive, the mechanism is calibrated to allow a slight, controlled increase in that intermediate pressure.

In plain terms: the regulator actually breathes a little more freely in the final minutes of a dive, which is exactly when you want it performing at its best. For a beginner still building confidence with air management, that consistency at low tank pressure is a genuine safety advantage.

The Second Stage: Compact and Thermally Managed

The Compact Pro second stage is small and light, which makes it comfortable in your mouth and easy to manage on the surface. Its shell is made from a material Cressi calls Thermoconductive Thermoplastic Neopolymer.

The purpose of this material is thermal management. In cold water, the expansion of air through a second stage causes rapid cooling, and ice can form on internal components. The thermoconductive material helps dissipate that cold, working alongside a dedicated safety valve to keep the second stage functioning reliably in low-temperature conditions.

The calibration pressure is set at 10 bar (145 PSI), which is the intermediate pressure at which the second stage is tuned to open and deliver air. This is a standard recreational setting that balances ease of breathing with performance.

INT or DIN: Which Connection Do You Need?

The MC9-SC/Compact Pro is available in both connection types. If you are not sure which you need, here is the short version:

• INT (Yoke) is the standard connection used at most recreational dive centers worldwide. The regulator clamps over the outside of the tank valve. This is the right choice for most new divers.
• DIN screws directly into the tank valve and is more common in Europe and in technical diving. It is also rated for higher-pressure cylinders.

The INT version weighs 943 g (33.3 oz). The DIN version is slightly lighter at 803 g (28.3 oz). Either way, this is a compact and travel-friendly setup.

If you are diving exclusively in warm tropical water and cold-water performance is genuinely irrelevant to your plans, there are simpler and lighter options in Cressi's lineup.
