Roatan is part of the Honduran Bay Islands, which lie on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest barrier reef system in the world. Roatan is known for its wall-oriented coral reefs, diverse marine life, and clear, warm waters.
Marine life highlights include eagle rays, green turtles, a kaleidoscope of colorful reef fish, and sharks at the nearby Cara a Cara dive site. History buffs will love the variety of shipwrecks, including the Prince Albert, Mr. Bud, the Odyssey and the El Aguila.
With the reef right on its doorstep, Barefoot Divers has access to over 30 dive sites within a 5- to 30-minute boat ride from the resort. Roatan has good diving conditions year-round, the optimal being the dry season from March to September. During these months, you can enjoy the best visibility, calm seas, and clear skies. Water temperatures remain a warm 78 to 84 F (25 to 29 C), so even during off-peak times, you’ll still have superb diving conditions.

The accommodation at Barefoot Cay Resort is split into two areas: the villas on the cay itself, labeled as oceanfront, and those mirrored on the Roatan side, labelled as oceanview.
Oceanfront villas are perfect for those wanting a more romantic and secluded getaway, with convenient access to the pool, palapa, spa, and restaurant. There are nine options, including a 420-square-foot, one-bedroom villa, a mid-range, 570-square-foot villa, and finally the 1,200-square-foot, two-bedroom villa, which fits six guests.
Scuba divers who prefer to roll right out of bed and into their dive gear might opt for the oceanview villas, consisting of four loft apartments directly above the dive shop. Three are one-bedroom, 450-square-foot studios, with the fifth, two-bedroom studio fitting four.
At mealtime, guests at the oceanview villas can hop on the short ferry over to the main resort to grab a bite to eat.
All of the villas are similarly styled, with azure blue color-ways, white wood paneling and dark wooden accents to add to that seafront vibe. All include a kitchen (or kitchenette) with a small refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, and basic kitchenware.
Bathrooms all feature a large shower and complimentary luxury bath products. For something extra special, the deluxe beach-view oceanfront villas have a private plunge pool, perfect for honeymooners or romantic getaways.

Dive-and-food packages include a daily breakfast, lunch, and a two-course dinner (choose between a starter or dessert to accompany your dinner’s main course). One non-alcoholic drink is included per meal, such as coffee, an ice tea, or a soda. Additional alcoholic beverages will incur an additional charge. Reservations are requested for dinner.
Depending on your preferences, you might find that eating three meals a day in the resort a tad monotonous and wish to try something different. For this you have two options—venture into town or cook in your room. Most villas feature a gourmet kitchen with a full-size refrigerator, stove, microwave, toaster oven, blender, and coffee maker. The deluxe beach-view oceanfront villas still feature a kitchenette, without a stove but with a toaster oven and blender. No matter, guests can easily brew a pot of coffee, pop popcorn, and make easy dinners.
Getting to the resort
Despite its secluded atmosphere, Barefoot Cay Resort is actually refreshingly easy to get to. A 10-minute drive away is Roatan’s international airport, Juan Manuel Galvez (RTB), which receives international flights from many major North American cities and airlines.
