Less than a 5-minute boat ride from Ambergris Caye is the vibrant Belize Barrier Reef, a near 200-mile stretch of the Mesoamerican Barrier System, and SunBreeze Hotel puts divers right in the heart of it. SunBreeze Hotel is a mid-range, casual, family-friendly hotel rather than a secluded luxury retreat. It sits on the beachfront in San Pedro, with the Caribbean Sea out front and the town’s amenities all within easy walking distance.

The diving here is mostly warm, clear-water boat diving, with easy morning departures to coral reef canyons and corridors, home to sharks, eagle rays, and turtles. For many visitors, the headline act is the Great Blue Hole, usually paired with Lighthouse Reef and Half Moon Caye on a full-day boat trip.

SunBreeze Hotel is a beachfront hotel in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize.
Sunbreeze offers 43 rooms, all opening onto the beachfront. All rooms have a bathroom, air-conditioning and basic amenities.

Ambergris Divers, a 5 star PADI Center, is on-site, making this a great divers’ hotel. It’s across the road from San Pedro’s small airport and most guests fly into Belize International Airport, then take a short domestic hopper flight to San Pedro.

The Diving: Barrier Reef Boat Days and the Great Blue Hole

Ambergris Divers is on a pier off SunBreeze’s beachfront.

SunBreeze’s on-site PADI Dive Center, Ambergris Divers, is situated on a pier jetting off from the beachfront, and is particularly well-suited for easy logistics. The shop offers a range of diving and in-water activities, such as day trips, PADI courses, snorkeling, fishing, and inland tours.

A typical day with Ambergris Divers is a standard two-tank Belize Barrier Reef trip, which departs at 9:00 am and returns around 12:30. The trip includes two guided dives, tanks, weights, drinking water, and light snacks, with dive gear available to rent for an additional fee. Ambergris Divers has a fleet of six boats at varying sizes, including Boss Lady, which has ample space for divers.

San Pedro looks out to the Belize Barrier Reef, and there is a wide selection of sites, some less than 15 minutes away. Other gems like the Blue Hole are worthy of a day trip. The neighboring dive sites and marine reserves are a mix of canyons, coral-rich walls and shallow seagrass. Popular trips are to Half Moon Caye, Hol Chan Marine Reserve or Turneffe Atoll. Here divers can expect to see rays, various turtles, nurse sharks, and perhaps manatees in the shallow seagrass.

There are several dive packages, from 1-3 days, which generally includes two tanks a day. Depending on the itinerary, these trips include stops at Lighthouse Reef Atoll, Half Moon Caye, Turneffe Atoll and the bucket-list dive: the Great Blue Hole.

A massive underwater sinkhole off the coast of Belize, measuring approximately 1,000 feet across and 400 feet (1300 m) deep, the Great Blue Hole offers a truly unique dive experience. Depending on your comfort or qualifications, you descend to 100-130 feet (30-40 m) to swim around the stalagmites and stalactites. Since you are just on regular air, it is a quick dive of approximately 30 minutes. Even though the dive itself is not challenging, you might want a sea sickness pill for the 2.5-hour boat ride from San Pedro.

Caribbean reef sharks are a fairly common sighting.

Ambergris Divers is built for casual vacation divers. There are no dedicated lockers, and the rinse bins are small. Given the size of the hopper plane from Belize City to San Pedro, many guests may find it easier to rent gear locally rather than fly with heavy dive bags.

The Resort: Casual and Convenient

SunBreeze’s appeal lies in its comfortable size and central location. With just 43 rooms, the resort feels laid-back and intimate, with enough space to relax around the pool or in the garden hammocks. Arranged in a horseshoe shape, most rooms look out toward the pool, gardens, or beachfront.

SunBreeze Hotel room

Accommodation is split across Standard Basic, Standard, Deluxe and Premier. Standard and Standard Basic are for guests who value a simple and practical base close to the reef and San Pedro. The Standard Basic Rooms do not offer a view, while Standard Rooms do over either the garden or pool.

The larger Premier and Deluxe have two queen or king-sized beds.

A step up, Deluxe Rooms offer garden and partial ocean views, while Premier Rooms are the top category, with pool and partial ocean views. Most rooms have two double, queen or king-sized beds, according to their tier. Across all categories, their interiors are decorated with white-washed walls, wooden furnishings, and have spacious bathrooms with stone counters. They are also equipped with air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, cable TV, a mini-fridge, and a safe.

Video
The inside of the resort is calm with a well-maintained garden and beachfront pool.

Within SunBreeze Resort, guests will find the inner tropical garden with hammocks and chairs, and, toward the beachfront, the medium-sized pool and Blue Water Grill restaurant. Located opposite San Pedro’s runway, you quite literally step off the plane and into the lobby, eat on-site, and walk to the dive boats. This makes SunBreeze a practical choice for groups where some want to dive while others want to stay close to town, because neither needs to compromise.

Dining: Blue Water Grill

Dining is centered on Blue Water Grill, the hotel’s oceanfront restaurant. It serves breakfast, lunch, bar snacks, and dinner. Their menu features a mix of South American flavors, American favorites and refreshing cocktails. Dishes include ceviche, tacos, burgers, pizzas, and grilled seafood. Since guests can easily walk into town for plenty of dining options, meals are optional add-ons.

The pool is adjacent to the restaurant, so guests can enjoy poolside service of drinks and snacks. For convenience, guests can add all food and drinks to their room and pay at the end. Blue Water Grill is accessible to the general public so we do recommend that you book a table in the evening, especially in the high season.

San Pedro Adventures

Shalom Spa is on-site and run by Delmy.

For those dry days where you don’t fancy lazying by the beachfront pool with a happy hour cocktail from Blue Water Grill, there is plenty to do. Organize a fishing trip with Ambergris Divers; rent a golf buggy, or simply wander through the island’s colorful streets.

Traffic in San Pedro comes in the form of quaint golf buggies, and renting one is a classic way to explore the caye. Follow the coast north or south, stopping at bars, casual lunch spots, shops, and the beach. It’s a good option for non-divers who want independence while the rest of the group is out on the boat.

For a slower day, SunBreeze’s on-site Shalom Spa is a great place to unwind to the backdrop of ocean waves. Shalom’s masseuse Delmy has over 20 years of experience, offering services such as Swedish massages, manicures, and full-body scrubs.

Video
Ambergris Divers can organize land tours as well.

There are also plenty of dry-day options, such as fishing trips, sunset cruises, or sailing excursions, all of which can be arranged locally. Many go to the Shark Ray Alley, a 15-foot (5 m) deep seagrass channel, to snorkel with nurse sharks, jacks, eagle rays and trevally. Dive boats in the area will often stop here during surface intervals.

Video

Guests can also arrange tours for mainland Belize to visit Mayan sites, discover its jungles and wildlife within. Of course this is a longer day, with boat rides or hopper planes, but it’s worth considering if you want to balance reef time with Belize’s inland culture and rainforest landscapes.

Who Should Stay Here?

Video
Getting around town is easy on foot or by golf cart.

SunBreeze is a great fit for divers who want simple reef access, town convenience, and mid-range comfort. It works especially well for beginners, newer certified divers, families, or couples who want diving to be easy without being isolated from San Pedro.

It is less ideal for divers looking for grand luxury resort facilities, such as valet-style gear handling, or large camera rinse stations. The dive setup is functional rather than plush, and the airport location is both a benefit and a drawback.

Sunbreeze and Blue Water Grill from the beach.

For the right guest, though, that’s the point. SunBreeze keeps the trip uncomplicated: land in San Pedro, walk across to the hotel, and dive the Belize Barrier Reef after breakfast, all while still having the restaurants and energy of the town right outside. With Ambergris Divers on-site and the Great Blue Hole within reach, SunBreeze Hotel offers a relaxed, practical way to experience Belize’s underwater highlights.
