What Makes the First Stage Worth Knowing About

The first stage is the piece that attaches to your cylinder valve and reduces tank pressure down to an intermediate pressure your second stage can work with. The Brut Pro uses a mechanically balanced, flow-by piston design.

"Balanced" matters here. An unbalanced piston regulator delivers slightly harder breathing as your tank pressure drops. A balanced one maintains consistent effort throughout the dive, from a full cylinder down to your reserve. That consistency is something you will actually feel on longer dives.

The housing is marine-grade chrome-plated brass, which handles saltwater, sand, and chlorinated pool environments without corroding. Sherwood also built in a patented dry-seal internal system. That means the internal spring chamber is isolated from the surrounding water, keeping salt, grit, and chlorine away from the working parts. It also means intermediate pressure adjustments can be made without oils or grease, which keeps servicing straightforward and clean.

Port count matters when you start building out your gear kit. The first stage gives you:

• 4 low-pressure (LP) ports with 3/8" threading, for your second stage, BCD inflator hose, and any additional LP accessories
• 2 high-pressure (HP) ports with 7/16" threading, typically used for a submersible pressure gauge or dive computer transmitter

Four LP ports is a generous count for a recreational setup. You will not run out of ports as your configuration grows.

The Second Stage: Pneumatically Balanced

The second stage is what you breathe from directly. The Brut Pro uses a pneumatically balanced second stage, which is a step up from a basic downstream design.

In a pneumatically balanced second stage, a small portion of the incoming air pressure helps hold the valve open once you start inhaling. The practical result is that breathing effort stays consistent regardless of depth or remaining tank pressure. At 30 metres, it should feel much the same as at 5 metres.

The large diaphragm and exhaust valve are designed to make both inhalation and exhalation feel easy. Reduced exhalation resistance matters on longer dives when jaw and breathing fatigue can creep in.

The mouthpiece is co-molded from two silicone compounds, which is softer and more comfortable than a single-material mouthpiece. The lever inside is precision Delrin, and the valve seat is silicone rubber. These are materials chosen for durability and consistent operation rather than cost-cutting.

The housing itself is glass-filled polyamide, a tough engineering plastic that resists impact and holds its shape under pressure.

Nitrox Compatibility

The Brut Pro is nitrox compatible up to 40% oxygen. If you are already enriched-air certified or plan to be, this covers the standard recreational nitrox range without any modification. If you dive trimix or higher oxygen fractions, this regulator is not designed for that.
