The Pathos Sniper Roller Speargun is a band-powered roller speargun built for spearfishers who want more power and range than a conventional rubber-band gun can deliver, without stepping up to the bulk and complexity of a pneumatic.

If you already know your way around a speargun and you're ready to move into roller territory, this is worth a close look. If you're new to spearfishing, the Sniper Roller is not the right starting point.

What Makes It a Roller

A roller speargun routes the rubber bands over a set of wheels at the muzzle, then back along the barrel to anchor points near the handle. This geometry lets you use longer bands without making the gun longer, which translates to more stored energy and more shaft velocity at the same gun length compared to a conventional setup.

The Sniper Roller runs twin 16mm rubbers, a substantial pairing that gives it serious power output. The muzzle is designed so the wheels can be removed easily for rinsing and maintenance, which matters more than it sounds after a saltwater session.

There is also a hole behind the wheels that accepts a second band, called a kicker band. This gives you the option to add a third band if you want to push power further, without modifying the gun.

Loading: Where This Gun Stands Apart

Loading a roller is typically harder than loading a conventional gun because you are pulling against more tension and routing bands around the muzzle wheels. Pathos addresses this directly.

The shaft is machined with a fourth tab positioned closer to the muzzle than on most rollers. This placement gives you a mechanical advantage when seating the bands, making the Sniper Roller notably easier to load than comparable guns. The stabilizer is also shaped with three grooves that act as loading stages, so you can work through the load in steps rather than fighting all the tension at once.

For a roller, that is a meaningful practical difference on a long dive day.

Barrel and Hydrodynamics

The barrel is anodized aluminum, shaped in what Pathos calls a cuttlefish profile, with an enclosed track running the length of the gun. The enclosed track keeps the shaft aligned through the shot and protects it from side-loading. The profile itself is designed to move cleanly through the water column, so you can swing and track fish without the gun dragging.

Anodized aluminum holds up well to saltwater, but like any aluminum speargun it benefits from a freshwater rinse after every dive.

A stabilizer is fitted to the gun and is designed to improve both movement through the water and positive floatation. Positive floatation means the gun floats rather than sinks if you let go, which is a practical safety consideration when you're working at depth.

The Shaft

The gun ships rigged with a 7mm Sandvik stainless steel shaft. Sandvik is a well-regarded steel grade in spearfishing for its toughness and resistance to bending. The shaft is heat treated to 52 Rockwell hardness, which sits in a range that balances rigidity with enough flex to resist snapping on impact.

The shaft tip is a tri-cut point with a single flopper. The flopper is a hinged barb that locks open on penetration and prevents the fish from backing off the shaft. The tri-cut tip cuts through scales and skin cleanly rather than deflecting.

Four shark-fin tabs are machined into the shaft. These are only 6mm tall, a deliberately low profile that reduces drag as the shaft travels through the water. The shark-fin design is compatible with open-muzzle spearguns as well, so the shaft is not locked to this gun if you run multiple setups.

Handle

The Sniper Roller uses Pathos's D'Angelo 3 handle with a universal grip shape. The trigger mechanism is stainless steel. The handle design is shared with the non-roller Sniper, so if you have handled that gun, the feel here will be familiar.

Lengths Available

The gun is available in four lengths to match different hunting environments:

Shorter lengths are easier to maneuver in structure but give up range. The 125 cm is a significant gun, suited to open-water hunting where you need to reach fish before they spook.

Who This Gun Is For, and Who It Is Not

The Sniper Roller is built for experienced spearfishers who understand band management, safe loading practice, and shot placement. The power output of twin 16mm bands on a roller setup is not something to underestimate, and the loading process, even with Pathos's improvements, requires familiarity with roller mechanics.

If you are already shooting a conventional band gun and want to step up your range and power, this is a logical move. If you are still developing your technique and breath-hold consistency, a simpler conventional gun will serve you better while you build those foundations.

The Sniper Roller is also not a dedicated cave or crevice gun. The shorter 75 cm length can work in tighter spots, but the roller muzzle adds some bulk compared to a plain muzzle, so factor that in if confined hunting is your primary focus.
