Construction and materials

The barrel is aluminum. That matters in saltwater because aluminum does not rust, and it keeps the gun light enough to handle comfortably on long dives.

The shaft is 9/32-inch heat-treated stainless steel across all four models. Heat treating stiffens the steel and helps it resist bending on impact. A bent shaft is one of the most common frustrations with budget spearguns, so this is worth noting.

The trigger mechanism is also stainless steel, which handles repeated saltwater exposure better than plated or coated alternatives.

The bands are 1/2-inch Nitro Bands. The diameter is consistent across all models; what changes is the length and quantity, which is how JBL scales the power between sizes.

Shaft tip options by model

The two larger models (Carbine and Super Carbine) come with 6mm threaded tips, which means you can swap in different spearheads. JBL lists the 847 spearhead as compatible with those two.

The Mini Carbine and The Mini come with a fixed point, a 1.5-inch flopper, and 6mm threads. A flopper is a small hinged barb that flips open once the shaft passes through the fish, preventing it from sliding back off. For beginners, this is a practical setup that works without any additional purchases.

Safety

The Carbine includes an integrated safety mechanism. This is not a detail to gloss over. A loaded speargun is a serious piece of equipment, and a reliable safety is a basic expectation before you point one at anything underwater. JBL builds it in rather than treating it as optional.

That said: always treat a loaded speargun as loaded, safety on or not, and never load it out of the water.
