Why buy from Amazon?

Amazon has a documented Prime delivery program that covers millions of items, and that is the most concrete order-related support behind buying here.

Worth knowing

Some customers report slower replies or needing more follow-up than expected when they asked for help after ordering. If an order needs post-purchase support, that part of the experience is not always smooth.

Some customers also report delivery problems after ordering. That keeps follow-up and delivery as the areas to watch if you place the order here.

DIVEIN's take
Why buy from House of Scuba?

House of Scuba publishes a defined return process for eligible items, including when credit or a refund applies and where fees or exclusions can affect the outcome. If you want the retailer's own terms in place before ordering, that is the most concrete reason to buy here.

It also states a continental U.S. free-shipping offer with exclusions, so the order terms are not left entirely to guesswork. That does not guarantee every item qualifies, but the policy itself is part of the buying case.

Worth knowing

Some customers describe friction around returns or refunds, and some also report slower replies or needing extra follow-up when they asked for help after ordering. Read the return terms closely before placing the order, especially the condition, packaging, and fee limits that can change the result.

JBL Woody Magnum Speargun: American-Style Pole Speargun Built for Serious Blue-Water Hunting

The JBL Woody Magnum Speargun is a band-powered, American-style wooden speargun aimed squarely at experienced spearfishers who want real reach, serious power, and a gun built with enough craftsmanship to last decades in saltwater.

If you already know how to load and handle a multi-band speargun safely and you are hunting larger, open-water species that demand range, this is worth a close look. If you are new to spearfishing, start somewhere smaller and simpler first.

Five Configurations, One Core Design

The Woody Magnum is not a single gun. It is a family of five lengths, each sharing the same body design and trigger but tuned for different hunting situations.

Model Total Length Shaft Length Bands Reach
Magnum 56" (142.2 cm) 51 x 5/16" (129.5 x 0.8 cm) 3 24 ft (7.3 m)
Florida Special 52" (132 cm) 45 x 5/16" (114 x 0.8 cm) 3 21 ft (6.4 m)
Sawed-Off 44" (111.7 cm) 39 x 5/16" (99 x 0.8 cm) 3 18 ft (5.5 m)
38 Special 36" (91.4 cm) 31 x 5/16" (78.7 x 0.8 cm) 2 14 ft (4.3 m)
Custom 29" (73.7 cm) 28 x 9/32" (71 x 0.7 cm) 2 12 ft (3.7 m)

The full Magnum at 56 inches with three bands and 24 feet of reach is a blue-water tool. It is long, powerful, and built for situations where you need to take a shot at distance before a fish spooks.

The shorter configurations trade range for maneuverability. The Sawed-Off and 38 Special suit tighter reef hunting, caves, or kelp beds where swinging a four-and-a-half-foot gun is impractical. The Custom, at 29 inches, is the most compact of the five.

Think about where you actually hunt before choosing a length. Bigger is not always better.

African Mahogany Body

The stock is milled from solid African Mahogany, hand-selected for straight grain. This matters practically, not just aesthetically. A straight-grained blank resists warping and cracking under repeated saltwater exposure better than a poorly selected one, and it keeps the barrel true over time.

The barrel itself is CNC machined, which means the shaft channel and trigger housing are cut to consistent tolerances rather than shaped by hand. That consistency directly affects how repeatably the shaft tracks on release.

Wood guns require more maintenance than aluminum or carbon guns. After salt water, rinse it thoroughly and keep the wood treated. Neglect that and even quality mahogany will eventually suffer.

The M10 Trigger Mechanism

The trigger is the part of a speargun most spearfishers care about most, and rightly so. A heavy or gritty trigger pull causes you to move the gun at the moment of release, throwing the shot.

The Woody Magnum uses JBL's M10 three-piece trigger mechanism, built from laser-cut 1/4-inch stainless steel components. It is rated to hold 2,400 lbs of band load while keeping the actual trigger pull to under 8 lbs.

That combination matters on a three-band gun. Three bands generate significant load on the sear. A trigger that can handle that load without requiring a heavy pull means you can load the gun fully and still release cleanly without disturbing your aim.

Shaft and Bands

The shaft on the four longer models is 5/16-inch 17-4 spring stainless steel, a grade chosen for its combination of strength and flex recovery. The Custom model steps down to a 9/32-inch shaft, appropriate for its lighter two-band configuration.

All models except the Custom come with 6mm threaded shaft tips, so you can swap spearheads to suit your target species. The Custom ships with a fixed point, a 3-inch flopper, and 6mm threads.

Bands run 9/16 inch in diameter across all five models. Lengths vary with the gun:

  • Magnum: 24 x 9/16" (61 cm)
  • Florida Special: 22 x 9/16" (55.8 cm)
  • Sawed-Off: 20 x 9/16" (50.8 cm)
  • 38 Special: 16 x 9/16" (40.6 cm)
  • Custom: 14 x 9/16" (35.6 cm)

A float is included with the gun. On a powerful three-band setup, a float line rigged to a surface float is not optional safety theater. It keeps your gun and fish recoverable if something goes wrong.

Who This Gun Suits and Who It Does Not

The Woody Magnum series is designed for experienced spearfishers who understand band safety, can load a three-band gun correctly and safely in the water, and are hunting in conditions where reach and power are the deciding factors.

The full Magnum in particular is a specialist tool. Its 24-foot reach and three-band power are genuinely useful for pelagic species in open water. In a tight reef scenario, that same length becomes a liability.

If you are still building your skills, or if most of your hunting happens in shallow reef environments under 15 feet of visibility, one of the shorter configurations or a different gun category entirely will serve you better. The Woody Magnum rewards hunters who know exactly what they need it for.
