Quick Facts About Koah Battle Axe 48 Speargun with GoPro Mount

  • A 48-inch wood speargun built around fast, tool-free switching between freeshaft and lineshaft rigging.
  • Comes with a spare shaft and a shaft holder, so a missed shot does not end your dive.
  • A 3/4-inch enclosed track runs the full length, making shaft reloading more controlled and reliable.
  • Switching to a line system requires no re-rigging, and going back to freeshaft leaves no loose monofilament trailing.
  • A GoPro mount is already installed and can also hold the optional Koah Q40 dive light if you skip the camera.
  • A solid choice for experienced freedivers and spearfishers who want one gun that handles both rigging styles without carrying a second setup.

Koah Battle Axe 48 – Wood Speargun Built Around Fast Rigging Switches

The Koah Battle Axe 48 is a 48-inch wood-barreled speargun designed specifically for divers who want to move quickly between two very different hunting setups: freeshafting and lineshafting.

If you are already spearfishing and you know the difference between those two approaches, this gun is worth a close look. If you are new to spearfishing entirely, it helps to understand what that distinction actually means before deciding whether this is the right first gun.

Freeshafting vs. Lineshafting: Why It Matters

When you freeshaft, the spear fires without any line attached. The shaft travels with the fish, which is useful in situations where a trailing line could tangle or spook prey. When you lineshaft, a monofilament line connects the shaft back to the gun, so you can retrieve the fish and shaft together.

Most guns commit you to one setup or the other. Switching usually means re-rigging, which takes time and often means dealing with loose, dangling monofilament.

The Battle Axe is built to solve that specific frustration.

The Quick-Switch Rigging System

The core reason to choose this gun over a comparable wood speargun is its quick-switch rig system. You can move from a line setup to freeshafting, or back again, without having to re-line the gun or manage loose monofilament hanging off the barrel.

That kind of flexibility matters when conditions change between dives, or when you are hunting different species on the same trip and want to adapt your setup without breaking out tools or spare line.

What Comes in the Box

  • Spare speargun shaft, so you can keep a second shaft loaded and ready rather than surfacing to reload after a miss
  • Spear shaft holder mounted on the gun to carry that spare shaft cleanly
  • Installed GoPro mount positioned on the barrel for footage or for attaching the optional Koah Q40 dive light

The Barrel and Track

The barrel is wood, which is a traditional and well-regarded material in spearfishing. Wood naturally dampens vibration and is less buoyant than most plastics, which helps the gun sit neutrally in the water and track smoothly when you aim.

Reloading is assisted by an extra-long, 3/4-inch enclosed track. An enclosed track keeps the shaft seated and guided during loading, which reduces the fumbling that an open track can cause, especially when you are working against a band under tension.

The GoPro Mount

The mount is already installed on the gun, not an add-on you have to source separately. If you shoot video, you can drop a GoPro straight onto it. If you do not, the same mount accepts the Koah Q40 dive light, which is sold separately. Either way, the mount gives you a forward-facing accessory point without drilling or clamping anything to the barrel yourself.

Who This Gun Is and Is Not For

The Battle Axe 48 suits a recreational spearfisher who hunts a variety of conditions and wants one gun that can adapt rather than two guns rigged differently.

At 48 inches, it is a mid-length gun. It is maneuverable enough for reef and structure hunting but has enough range for open-water shots on medium-sized fish. It is not a short-range cave or crevice gun, and it is not built for the extreme range that a longer railgun or a pneumatic would give you on large pelagic species.

If you already know you exclusively freeshaft or exclusively lineshaft and never plan to switch, the dual-rig system is a feature you would pay for but never use. A simpler gun optimized for one approach might suit you better.

The included spare shaft and shaft holder are genuinely useful additions rather than filler. For anyone who has surfaced empty-handed after a miss because reloading mid-dive was not practical, having a second shaft staged and ready changes how you hunt.
