Freeshafting vs. Lineshafting: Why It Matters

When you freeshaft, the spear fires without any line attached. The shaft travels with the fish, which is useful in situations where a trailing line could tangle or spook prey. When you lineshaft, a monofilament line connects the shaft back to the gun, so you can retrieve the fish and shaft together.

Most guns commit you to one setup or the other. Switching usually means re-rigging, which takes time and often means dealing with loose, dangling monofilament.

The Barrel and Track
