The Cressi AC2 Compact is a complete regulator set, meaning it includes both the first stage (the part that attaches to your tank valve) and the second stage (the part you breathe from). It is designed around a straightforward, time-tested internal mechanism that prioritizes reliability over advanced features.

How the First Stage Works

The first stage uses a non-balanced flow-by piston design. Here is what that means in plain terms: a piston is the moving part that reduces the high pressure in your tank down to an intermediate pressure your second stage can use. "Non-balanced" means the effort required to open that piston changes slightly as the tank drains and pressure drops. You may notice breathing feels marginally different near the end of a tank compared to the start, though in normal recreational conditions this is rarely dramatic.

The upside of this design is that it is mechanically simple. Fewer moving parts means less that can go wrong, and servicing is straightforward when the time comes.

The first stage body is made from chromed brass, which handles saltwater and repeated rinsing well over the long term. A conical filter sits at the tank inlet to allow good airflow into the system.

Port layout on the first stage:

• 1 high-pressure (HP) port, 7/16" thread, for your pressure gauge or computer console
• 4 low-pressure (LP) ports, 3/8" thread, for your second stage, alternate air source, and BCD inflator hose

Four LP ports gives you enough connections for a standard recreational setup without crowding. The yoke (also called A-clamp) connection means it fits the most common tank valve style used at dive shops and resorts worldwide.

The Second Stage

The second stage uses a downstream demand valve. Downstream means the valve opens in the same direction air is flowing, so if the valve ever sticks or fails, air continues to flow rather than cutting off. This is the safer failure mode, and it is standard on virtually all recreational regulators for good reason.

The housing is built from polymer plastic with a silicone mouthpiece. Polymer second stages are lighter than metal alternatives and resist corrosion well. The silicone mouthpiece is comfortable for longer dives.

The AC2 Compact includes a dive/pre-dive venturi adjustment on the second stage. Before you enter the water, you set it to pre-dive, which prevents the regulator from free-flowing (delivering air continuously) while it is out of your mouth at the surface. Once you are underwater and breathing from it, you switch it to dive. This is a practical feature that keeps things tidy on the boat.

A large, soft purge button on the front of the second stage lets you clear any water that enters with a firm press, which is useful if you need to reseat your mouthpiece mid-dive.

Where It Has Limits

The non-balanced piston design performs well in typical recreational conditions, but it is not the first choice for cold water diving in demanding conditions or for divers who want the most consistent breathing feel across a full tank. Balanced piston or diaphragm regulators tend to perform more evenly under those circumstances.
