Beuchat Espadon Sport Speargun: Entry-Level Band Gun for Reef and Shallow-Water Spearfishing

The Beuchat Espadon Sport is a straightforward rubber-band-powered speargun built for beginners stepping into spearfishing for the first time.

If you are new to spearfishing and plan to hunt reef fish in shallow water, this gun is designed with you in mind.

What kind of gun is this?

A band gun (sometimes called a sling gun) works by stretching one or more rubber bands, or "power bands," over the shaft. When you pull the trigger, the band releases and propels the shaft forward. It is the most common type of speargun and the easiest to load and maintain.

The Espadon Sport uses a single 13mm circular power band fixed to the muzzle with a screw, paired with a standard stainless-steel wishbone (the small U-shaped clip that hooks the band to the shaft notch). One band means less pulling force needed to load it, which matters when you are learning the motion underwater for the first time.

The muzzle is a closed design, meaning the shaft is fully enclosed at the tip of the barrel. This gives the shaft a guided track along its full length, which helps with accuracy at shorter ranges typical of reef diving.

The barrel and shaft

The barrel is made from 25mm anodized aluminum, which keeps the gun light in hand without sacrificing enough rigidity to shoot straight. Anodizing is a surface treatment that hardens aluminum and slows corrosion in saltwater, an important quality in any spearfishing gear.

The shaft is 6mm black galvanized steel. Galvanized steel resists rust reasonably well in saltwater, though a rinse in fresh water after each session will extend its life considerably. The tip is a Tahitian-style single flopper barb, meaning a small hinged barb that lies flat on entry and then flips open once the shaft passes through the fish, holding it on the spear. It is a clean, effective design for the kind of fish you will encounter on a reef.

A 2mm braided polyamide line runs from the shaft back to the gun. When you fire, the shaft travels but stays tethered, so you can retrieve both the spear and your catch without chasing them through the water.

Sizes

The Espadon Sport is available in five lengths:

Shorter lengths (50 to 60cm) suit tight reef environments where you are maneuvering through rocks or coral and need a compact gun you can swing and aim quickly in confined spaces. Longer lengths (80 to 90cm) give the band more stretch and the shaft more velocity, which helps at greater distances and in more open water. As a beginner, a mid-range length around 60 to 70cm is a sensible starting point for most reef conditions.

The handle

The pistol-grip handle is a familiar, intuitive shape if you have ever held any kind of pistol or trigger-operated tool. It puts your hand in a natural position and keeps the gun comfortable to aim during the time you are waiting for a fish to come within range.

Who this gun is not for

The Espadon Sport is built for shallow reef and nearshore hunting, not blue-water or pelagic spearfishing. With a single band and a shaft on the lighter end of the spectrum, it does not have the raw power needed to reliably take larger, faster open-water species at distance.

If you are an experienced spearfisher targeting bigger fish in deeper or more open conditions, you will likely want a gun with a longer barrel, a heavier shaft, and multiple bands. This one is not that gun.

A practical note on getting started

Spearfishing regulations vary significantly by location, covering which species you can take, minimum sizes, and where you are permitted to hunt. Before you get in the water, check the rules for your specific area. The Espadon Sport will not come with that information, but knowing it before your first dive is as important as knowing how to load the gun safely.
