The Atomic Aquatics TFX is a complete regulator set, first stage and second stage together, built almost entirely from titanium and Monel.

If you dive cold water regularly, travel frequently, or simply want a regulator you can trust for years without constant servicing, the TFX is worth serious consideration.

What Makes the TFX Different from a Conventional Regulator

Most second stages route exhaled air out through a valve at the rear of the housing. The TFX does it differently.

The name itself explains the concept: Titanium Front Exhaust. Both the inhalation diaphragm and the exhaust valve sit centered at the front of the second stage. Atomic Aquatics designed this layout to improve breathing comfort and reduce the chance of water entering the mouthpiece during a dive.

The coaxial arrangement of the diaphragm and exhaust valve also means breathing effort is distributed across a full 360 degrees rather than pulling air from one direction. In practical terms, this is intended to make each breath feel more even regardless of how you orient your head in the water.

The First Stage: T3 Titanium Piston

The TFX pairs its second stage with the Atomic Aquatics T3 first stage, the company's flagship.

A few things set the T3 apart:

• Balanced flow-through piston design using a high-flow Monel piston, which maintains consistent intermediate pressure as tank pressure drops. You get reliable airflow even as the dive progresses and cylinder pressure falls.
• Conical seat and blunt-end piston rather than the sharp-edged seat found in most competitors. This geometry avoids cutting into the seat over time, which is why Atomic Aquatics rates the T3 for a 3-year or 300-dive service interval, longer than most regulators on the market.
• Environmentally sealed first stage, meaning the internal mechanism is factory-sealed against water, silt, and sand. This matters most in cold water, where an unsealed first stage can ice up and free-flow, and in silty conditions where contamination shortens regulator life.
• Self-lubricating high-pressure piston seal, which reduces maintenance demands between service intervals.

The Second Stage: TFX Details

The second stage body, lever, and sealing orifice are all titanium. Structural metal parts that touch seawater are not just coated or anodized; they are titanium through and through.

• Venturi control knob with tuning switch and variable lift cam lets you adjust airflow sensitivity. You can dial the second stage down for surface conditions where free-flowing is a risk, then open it up for the responsive delivery you want at depth.
• Seat-saving dynamic orifice and a low-friction cap at the cam surface are Atomic Aquatics' approach to reducing seat wear over time, consistent with the extended service interval philosophy of the T3.
• Reversible low-pressure rubber seat makes field maintenance simpler. When one side of the seat wears, it can be flipped rather than immediately replaced.
• Super-flex medical-grade silicone core hose at 32 inches (81.3 cm). Silicone is more flexible than rubber in cold temperatures, which matters when you are managing hoses in a drysuit configuration or in winter conditions.
• Soft flexible purge cover and an extended silicone exhaust tee complete the second stage.

Nitrox Compatibility

The TFX is Nitrox ready up to 40% oxygen out of the box. No additional cleaning or modification is needed for enriched air mixes within that range. If you regularly dive nitrox on recreational profiles, this is handled without any extra steps.

Above 40% oxygen, the regulator is not rated, so it is not a technical or rebreather-oriented tool in that sense.

Weight and Travel

The complete set weighs approximately 1.6 lbs. (734g). For a full first and second stage in titanium, that is genuinely light. Titanium is roughly 45% lighter than the brass used in most regulators, and it does not corrode in salt water the way brass does even with careful rinsing.

If you travel to dive, the weight saving adds up in a kit bag, and the corrosion resistance means the regulator tolerates the realities of travel, humid gear bags, delayed rinsing, and variable service access, better than a brass-bodied alternative.

DIN Configuration

This version uses a DIN fitting, which threads directly into the cylinder valve rather than clamping over it with a yoke. DIN connections are stronger and less prone to blowouts under pressure, which is why they are the standard in technical diving and common in European dive destinations. If your cylinders or rental tanks at your usual dive sites use yoke valves, you will need a DIN adapter or a different version of this regulator.

Who This Regulator Is Best For

The TFX suits a diver who dives seriously and dives often, in cold water, on travel, or both. The extended service interval, sealed first stage, and all-titanium construction are not features that add much value to someone who dives a handful of times a year in warm, clear water. They make a real difference if you are logging regular dives across varied conditions and want a regulator that stays reliable with less intervention.

It is not the right fit if you are looking for a first regulator on a modest budget, or if you dive exclusively in warm, calm conditions and prioritize low upfront cost. The TFX is built to last and built to perform; that comes with a corresponding commitment.
