Aqualung Leg3nd Elite Regulator: High-Performance First and Second Stage Set for Serious Recreational and Advanced Divers

The Aqualung Leg3nd Elite is a matched first and second stage regulator set built around cold-water performance, breathing comfort, and long-term reliability.

If you dive regularly, push into colder water, or simply want a regulator that gets out of your way and lets you focus on the dive, this is the level of kit worth considering.

It is not aimed at someone taking their first open-water course. But if you are a certified diver who has outgrown an entry-level reg, or an experienced diver who wants a premium daily driver without moving into technical gear, the Leg3nd Elite sits squarely in your range.

First Stage: How It Feeds Air to Everything Else

The first stage is a balanced diaphragm design. Balanced means the regulator delivers air at a consistent intermediate pressure regardless of how deep you go or how low your tank gets. You will not feel the breathing get harder as the dive progresses.

The diaphragm construction also matters for cold water. In a piston-style first stage, water contacts internal moving parts directly. In a diaphragm design, a flexible membrane separates those parts from the surrounding water. That separation is the foundation of the Leg3nd Elite's cold-water resistance.

Aqualung adds three specific anti-freeze measures on top of that:

• Integrated dry chamber keeps the internal mechanism isolated from water and silt, protecting the components most vulnerable to icing.
• Deep external ribs increase the surface area of the first stage body, which helps it absorb heat from the surrounding water and slow the temperature drop that leads to free-flow.
• Over-molded external cap delays ice formation on the outer diaphragm itself, giving you a longer window before cold becomes a problem.

For divers in temperate or cold water, these are not marketing details. Ice forming inside a first stage can cause a free-flow, where the regulator dumps air continuously. These three layers of protection work together to push that risk back significantly.

The first stage is built from chrome-plated brass, which is dense and corrosion-resistant. It is heavier than some alternatives, but it holds up well over years of salt water exposure.

Port count gives you room to build a complete kit without adapters:

Four LP ports covers your second stage, an alternate air source (octopus), a BCD inflator hose, and a dry suit inflator if you use one, all without a Y-adapter. Two HP ports handle a pressure gauge and a dive computer transmitter simultaneously.

The first stage comes in a DIN fitting configuration. DIN screws directly into the tank valve and is the preferred choice for cold-water and technical diving because it creates a more secure, leak-resistant connection. If you currently dive with a yoke setup, check your cylinder valves before purchasing, or ask about a DIN-to-yoke adapter.

The yoke screw itself uses a bi-material grip surface designed to give you purchase even with cold, gloved hands. A small detail, but one that matters when you are setting up kit on a boat in February.

The Auto-Closure Device (ACD) is a spring-loaded dust cap that seals the first stage inlet automatically when the regulator is off the tank. This keeps water and silt out of the internal components between dives, reducing wear and the chance of contamination reaching the seat and filter.

Second Stage: Breathing Feel and Current Resistance

The second stage is a pneumatically balanced downstream demand valve. Pneumatically balanced means a small amount of intermediate pressure from the first stage acts against the valve mechanism, reducing the cracking effort needed to start each breath. The result is a noticeably easier inhale, especially at depth where unbalanced regulators tend to feel stiffer.

Two controls let you tune the breathing feel to conditions:

• Inhalation effort adjustment lets you dial the second stage between a lighter, more sensitive feel and a firmer setting that is less likely to free-flow in surge.
• Dive/Pre-Dive Venturi switch controls the venturi effect inside the second stage. In Pre-Dive position, the regulator is less prone to free-flowing when it is out of your mouth on the surface or in a current. Switch to Dive once you descend.

The second stage body is Techno-Polymer, a reinforced engineering plastic. It is lighter than metal and does not corrode. The internal components use polyurethane and silicone, both standard materials for regulator internals that hold up well with regular servicing.

Aqualung redesigned the front cover of this generation with radial openings around the purge button. These openings redirect airflow to make the regulator less susceptible to free-flowing when a current hits it directly in the face. If you dive in moving water, that is a practical benefit rather than a cosmetic one.

The exhaust tee and cover are over-molded for a softer feel against the chin. The air chamber deflector inside the second stage evens out the airflow you inhale, which reduces the sensation of a blast of cold air hitting the back of your throat on each breath.

The mouthpiece is Aqualung's Comfo-Bite design, shaped to reduce the clenching effort required to hold the second stage in place. On longer dives, jaw fatigue is a real and underappreciated source of discomfort. A mouthpiece that fits well makes a genuine difference over a 60-minute dive.

Nitrox Compatibility

The Leg3nd Elite is nitrox compatible up to 40% oxygen straight from the box, with no additional cleaning or modification required. That covers the vast majority of recreational enriched-air mixes, including the common 32% (EAN32) and 36% (EAN36) blends.

If you plan to dive mixes above 40%, this regulator is not rated for that use without specialist oxygen-service preparation. For standard recreational nitrox diving, you are fully covered.

The Aqua Flex hose is a mid-length standard. It works for most recreational configurations. If you dive sidemount or prefer a longer hose for specific setups, you would swap it out, but for a standard back-gas primary, 29 inches is a practical starting point.

Who This Regulator Is and Is Not For

The Leg3nd Elite is a strong choice if you dive year-round in cooler water, want a regulator that adjusts to your breathing preferences, and plan to keep it for years rather than upgrade again in two seasons.

It suits divers who have moved past the basics and want gear that performs without constant fiddling. The adjustments are there when you need them, but the defaults work well straight out of the box.

It is not the right fit if you are looking for a lightweight travel regulator. Chrome-plated brass is robust, not compact. If most of your diving is in warm, calm water and you prioritize packing light, a lighter second stage or a different first stage material might suit you better.

It is also not configured for technical diving out of the box. The nitrox rating stops at 40%, and the DIN fitting, while appropriate for many technical setups, would need to be paired with additional kit and proper gas-service work for high-oxygen mixes.

For the recreational or advanced diver who dives seriously and wants a regulator that earns its keep in cold, demanding conditions, the Leg3nd Elite is a well-engineered, well-specified choice.
