The Apeks XL4 Ocea is a full regulator set, first stage and second stage, designed to perform across all diving conditions including cold water, while being built from materials chosen specifically to reduce environmental impact.

If you are a recreational diver who cares about where your gear comes from, or a technical diver looking to shave weight without giving up cold-water capability, the Ocea is worth a serious look.

What Makes This Regulator Different

Most regulators are not built with their material origins in mind. The XL4 Ocea is.

Apeks partnered with PlasticBank to make the Ocea what they call the world's first ocean plastic negative regulator. The second stage body is made from bioplastic techno-polymer, a material sourced from non-petroleum-based feedstocks rather than conventional plastics. The recycled polymers used in the build contain up to 70% post-consumer waste.

The first stage uses lead-free eco brass, which is easier to recycle than standard brass alloys, and the chrome plating uses trivalent rather than hexavalent chrome, a process that involves significantly fewer hazardous chemicals.

None of this is cosmetic. The materials are doing real work in the regulator's construction, and Apeks has not traded performance to use them.

First Stage: Over-Balanced Diaphragm Design

The first stage uses an over-balanced diaphragm mechanism. Here is what that means for you underwater: as you go deeper, the intermediate pressure in the hose (the pressure between the first and second stage) increases at a rate faster than the surrounding water pressure. The result is that breathing effort actually gets easier the deeper you go, rather than staying flat or getting slightly harder.

This is a genuine advantage for anyone pushing depth or diving in demanding conditions. It is also why diaphragm-based first stages are a standard choice for cold-water diving, since the diaphragm mechanism keeps the internal working parts sealed away from the water.

The port layout gives you room to run multiple hoses:

  • Four low-pressure ports threaded at 3/8"-24 UNF, for your primary second stage, alternate air source, BCD inflator, and drysuit if needed.
  • Two high-pressure ports threaded at 7/16"-20 UNF, for your SPG and any additional pressure gauge.

That port count is generous enough for a technical configuration without being excessive for a recreational setup.

Second Stage: Balanced, Light, and Comfortable

The second stage uses a pneumatically balanced downstream demand valve. Balanced means the valve is not affected by the intermediate pressure fluctuating as you breathe or descend, so the breathing feel stays consistent throughout the dive and as the tank pressure drops. Downstream means the valve fails open, which is the safer failure mode: if something goes wrong, you get air rather than nothing.

The body is compact and built from the bioplastic techno-polymer mentioned above. It is noticeably light, which matters on long dives. Less weight hanging off your jaw means less fatigue, and that is a real comfort factor when you are already managing a technical rig with multiple tanks and accessories.

The second stage includes:

  • Venturi lever (also called the dive/pre-dive switch): flipped to pre-dive before you enter the water, it reduces the tendency for the second stage to free-flow on the surface. Flip it to dive once you are under.
  • Large purge button: self-flushing design, easy to locate and press even with gloves on.
  • Nylon braided hose at 29 inches (73.7 cm): braided nylon performs better than rubber in cold water because it stays flexible at low temperatures. The standard 3/8" hose connection means you can swap or replace it without hunting for proprietary fittings.

Nitrox Compatibility

The XL4 Ocea is nitrox compatible up to 40% oxygen as supplied. If you are already diving enriched air nitrox at standard recreational mixes, you are covered. Mixes above 40% O2 would require oxygen-clean servicing and are outside the scope of this regulator's out-of-box rating.

Who This Regulator Suits

The Ocea works well across a wide range of divers, but it fits a few profiles particularly well.

A Note on the Yoke Configuration

This version of the XL4 Ocea is a yoke (A-clamp) first stage, which fits the most common cylinder valve type used in recreational and much of technical diving. If you regularly dive DIN valves (the threaded connection standard used in many technical and European contexts), check that the cylinders at your dive site are compatible, or look for the DIN version of this regulator.
