The Cressi Supernova Dry Snorkel is a full-featured dry snorkel designed for adult snorkelers who want to spend more time watching what is below them and less time dealing with water in their tube.

If you are new to snorkeling, or you have tried a basic snorkel and found yourself constantly clearing water out of it, this is the kind of upgrade that genuinely changes the experience.

What "Dry Top" Actually Means

A dry snorkel has a valve at the very top of the tube. When you duck below the surface, that valve seals shut automatically, blocking water from entering the tube at all.

This is different from a "semi-dry" snorkel, which only has a splash guard to deflect wave water, or a basic open-top snorkel that lets water in freely whenever you submerge.

The Supernova's dry top works well in choppy conditions at the surface, and it seals the tube when you dive down for a closer look. You will rarely come back up to a mouthful of water.

How the Tube Is Built

The lower section of the tube is corrugated, meaning it is ribbed and flexible rather than rigid. This lets it bend naturally when you turn your head, instead of pulling at your mouth.

That corrugated section also has a smooth internal bore, which matters more than it sounds. A rough or ridged interior can trap water droplets and make clearing the snorkel harder. Here, any water that does get in runs straight down into the reservoir at the bottom rather than sitting in the tube.

The tube itself is contoured, meaning it curves to follow the shape of your head rather than sticking out at an awkward angle.

Clearing Water: The Purge Valve

Even with a dry top, small amounts of water can occasionally get in, especially if the seal is briefly broken at the surface. The Supernova handles this with a large elliptic one-way exhaust valve in a collection reservoir at the bottom of the tube.

Water drains down into that reservoir under gravity. A short, sharp exhale pushes it out through the one-way valve. You do not need to blast a full breath to clear it.

This is one of the more practical features on the snorkel, and it is worth understanding before you buy: purge valves do add a small amount of mechanical complexity compared to a simple open-bottom tube, but they make the snorkel noticeably easier to use, especially for beginners.

Mouthpiece Comfort and Fit

Both the mouthpiece and the corrugated tube section are made from hypoallergenic silicone. Silicone is softer and more flexible than older plastic mouthpieces, and it does not cause the jaw fatigue that harder materials tend to produce over a long session.

The mouthpiece is also removable and replaceable, which means if it ever wears out or you want a different shape, you are not stuck replacing the whole snorkel.

Switching to a Scuba Regulator

Who This Snorkel Is Not For

If you are a freediver who dives deep repeatedly on breath-holds, a dry-top snorkel is generally not the right choice. The dry valve can create slight resistance when you are trying to breathe quickly at the surface between dives, and most freedivers prefer a simple open-top or semi-dry tube for that reason.
