DIVEIN's take
Why buy from Amazon?

Amazon has a documented Prime delivery program that covers millions of items, and that is the most concrete order-related support behind buying here.

Worth knowing

Some customers report slower replies or needing more follow-up than expected when they asked for help after ordering. If an order needs post-purchase support, that part of the experience is not always smooth.

Some customers also report delivery problems after ordering. That keeps follow-up and delivery as the areas to watch if you place the order here.

Sea to Summit Big River Dry Backpack 50L – A Waterproof Haul Pack Built for Wet Adventures

The Sea to Summit Big River Dry Backpack is a 50-liter waterproof pack designed to keep your gear dry when water is unavoidable, not just inconvenient.

If you spend time on the water, paddling a kayak, running a raft, or riding a canoe, and you need a pack that can take a dunking and keep your kit dry on the other side, this is the kind of bag built for that job.

It is not a hiking pack with a rain cover. It is a true dry bag with a wearable harness, which is a meaningful difference when you are portaging between rapids or loading a boat in the rain.

Construction and Waterproofing

The shell is made from 420D nylon with a TPU coating, a tough thermoplastic laminate that resists abrasion and keeps water out without adding much weight.

The base gets an extra layer of protection with a triple coating, which makes sense because the bottom of a dry bag takes the most punishment, sitting in bilge water, scraping across rocks, and getting dragged across wet ground.

The seams are double-stitched and tape-sealed, so water does not sneak in through the stitching. The closure is a hypalon roll-top, the same kind of material used in inflatable boat construction. You roll it down, clip the buckle, and the bag is sealed. This is a proven system for dry bags and it works reliably in wet conditions.

The interior uses a white laminate lining. That detail matters more than it sounds. When you are digging through a dark bag for your wallet or dry clothes, a white interior makes it much easier to see what is inside.

The Harness System

Most dry bags are just bags. The Big River earns the "backpack" name with a real harness: adjustable EVA foam shoulder straps, a sternum strap, and a removable 1.5-inch webbing hip belt.

EVA foam is the same closed-cell material used in wetsuit booties and quality hiking footbeds. It cushions the shoulder straps and does not absorb water, which matters when everything around you is wet.

The hip belt is removable, so if you are stuffing the bag into a kayak hatch or strapping it to a motorcycle, you can take it off and keep the profile clean. The sternum strap keeps the shoulder straps from spreading when you are moving over uneven ground.

This is a framed backpack design, meaning it has enough structure to carry a real load comfortably, not just sling a light kit over your shoulder.

Shape, Size, and Carrying Capacity

Closed down, the pack measures roughly 13.6 x 11.2 x 23.8 inches and holds 50 liters when the roll-top is rolled three times. That is a generous capacity for a day on the water or an overnight paddling trip.

The oval base is a practical design choice. Round-bottomed dry bags roll around on a boat deck and are annoying to pack. The oval base keeps the bag upright and stable.

The low-profile, streamlined shape is intentional for on-water use, where a wide or boxy pack catches wind and throws off balance. Multiple lash points on the exterior let you attach extra gear or stack bags together.

The whole pack weighs 1.7 pounds (835 grams), which is light for a structured 50-liter waterproof backpack.

The Field-Repair Buckle

Sea to Summit includes a patent-pending field repair buckle that can be swapped out in seconds without tools. A broken buckle on a standard pack means the bag is compromised until you get home. On a multi-day river trip, that matters. Being able to replace it on the spot keeps the pack functional.

Care and Warranty

The pack is hand wash only, which is standard for TPU-coated gear. Machine washing can degrade the coating over time.

Sea to Summit backs the Big River with a lifetime manufacturer guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship. For a pack you plan to use hard and often, that kind of coverage is worth noting.

Who This Pack Is For, and Who It Is Not

The Big River 50L is well-suited to paddlers, rafters, and canoeists who need a pack that can survive full immersion and still be comfortable to carry between water sections. It also works well for motorcycle touring in wet conditions, where a waterproof pack that sits securely is more practical than a dry bag bungeed to a seat.

If you need a technical hiking pack with a load-transfer frame, lumbar padding, and multiple access points, this is not that bag. It has one main compartment, one pocket, and a roll-top entry. The design is deliberate: fewer openings means fewer places for water to get in.

If you are a diver looking for a bag to carry gear to the boat, the Big River can work for that role, but it is purpose-built for on-water paddling use, not dive-specific storage. There are no dedicated compartments for fins or regulators.

For the paddler who wants a serious, wearable dry bag that does not compromise on waterproofing or comfort, the Sea to Summit Big River 50L is a well-thought-out piece of kit.
