OrcaTorch D550 – Compact Primary Dive Light with Serious Depth Rating

The OrcaTorch D550 is a handheld dive light small enough to pocket in your BCD yet rated to depths most recreational divers will never reach.

If you are a recreational diver who wants a reliable primary light for wreck penetration, cavern edges, or night dives, this is worth a close look. It also makes a credible backup light for technical divers who need something compact and deep-rated to clip or pocket.

Output and Runtime

The D550 runs a CREE XM-L2 LED and puts out a maximum of 1,000 lumens on high mode. That is enough to push into a wreck or light up a dark wall dive without squinting.

The tradeoff is runtime. On high, you get 125 minutes. That covers a single long dive comfortably, but if you are doing a multi-dive day and relying on this as your only light, plan your charges between dives.

Switch to low mode and the picture changes considerably. At 367 lumens, the light runs for 5 hours and 45 minutes. For a night dive where ambient conditions are moderate, or for a safety light you want burning all the way through a surface swim, low mode is more than adequate and buys you a full day of diving on one charge.

A tight beam is good for distance and for picking out detail in low-visibility conditions. It is less useful for wide-area illumination when you just want to light up the reef around you. If you prefer a floody beam for general reef diving, this shape may feel narrow. If you want to punch light into a dark interior or down a steep wall, the narrow hot spot is an advantage.

Depth Rating and Build

The depth rating is 492 feet (150 m). For recreational diving, that is far beyond what you will ever need, which means the housing has a meaningful safety margin at your actual depths.

The body is aircraft-grade aluminum with a diamond-grade hard-anodized finish designed to resist saltwater corrosion. The lens is a double-coated toughened glass panel, 4 mm thick, sealed with an O-ring. The light also passed a 1-meter drop test, so it can take the knocks of a dive bag without drama.

Switch and Controls

The D550 uses a magnetic tail switch, fully sealed with no moving parts that break the housing. Underwater, that matters: there is no button shaft that water can work its way past over time. You rotate or press the tail cap to cycle through modes.

A useful detail is the memory function: when you switch the light off and back on, it returns to the last mode you used. On a dive, that means you are not cycling back through modes every time you turn it off during a safety stop or surface swim.

The light also includes reverse polarity protection (so a backward battery will not damage the circuit) and a low battery warning so you are not caught off guard mid-dive.

Size and Carry

At 5.67 inches long and just 1 inch in diameter at the body, the D550 is genuinely compact. It weighs 6.46 oz (183 g) without the battery, which is light enough to forget it is in your pocket.

The included wrist strap and glove mount let you keep it on your hand during a dive without holding it constantly. The lanyard is there if you prefer to clip it off. It will fit in a standard BCD pocket without forcing it.
