EDGE SMART DRIVE K5 Underwater Scooter: A Compact DPV for Snorkelers and Recreational Divers

The EDGE SMART DRIVE K5 is a diver propulsion vehicle (DPV), sometimes called a sea scooter, that pulls you through the water so you can cover more ground with less effort.

If you are a recreational diver or snorkeler who wants to explore a wider area on a single dive, keep up with faster currents, or simply add something new to a trip, the K5 is built for that kind of use.

What it does underwater

The K5 runs a 550W motor that produces up to 17.19 lbs of thrust and a top speed of 4.47 mph.

To put that in context: a relaxed recreational diver kicks at roughly 1 to 1.5 mph. At full throttle, the K5 moves you at a pace that makes covering a reef section or returning against a mild current genuinely easy.

You get three speed settings, switchable on the go. That matters because running full speed drains the battery faster and can stir up sediment. Starting slow and stepping up as conditions require is the practical way to use it.

Rated to 50 metres (164 feet), the K5 reaches deeper than most recreational diver certifications allow, so depth is not a limiting factor for the vast majority of people who will use it.

Battery and charging

The built-in 99.7 Wh battery gives you up to 60 minutes of runtime on a full charge.

That figure is worth reading carefully. Sixty minutes at moderate speed is realistic. Running at full throttle the entire time will shorten that. Most recreational dives run 45 to 60 minutes anyway, so one charge typically covers one dive.

Recharging takes 1.5 hours using the included PD 100W GaN fast charger. If you are doing two dives in a morning with a surface interval in between, you may be able to top it up between dives depending on how much you used.

The K5 also supports 100W reverse charging, meaning you can use it as a power bank to charge your phone or camera from the same battery. Useful on a boat or a remote beach.

Because the battery is rated at 99.7 Wh, it falls just under the 100 Wh threshold that most airlines set for carry-on lithium batteries. That means it is approved for carry-on luggage, which removes the logistical headache of travelling with it. Always confirm with your specific airline before flying.

Size, weight, and portability

At 4.85 lbs (2.2 kg), the K5 is light enough to carry in one hand and fits into a carry-on bag.

The package dimensions are roughly 12.8 x 9.6 x 6.3 inches, compact enough to sit in an overhead bin or a day bag. For divers who travel frequently and want to bring their own scooter without checking extra luggage, that is a genuine practical advantage.

Build and maintenance

The body is metal construction, described as wear-resistant and pressure-resistant, with anti-corrosion technology applied to the motor. Saltwater is hard on moving parts, and a motor that is not protected will corrode quickly. The anti-corrosion treatment is aimed directly at that problem.

The modular design means the unit can be disassembled and reassembled without tools, which makes rinsing and drying the components after a saltwater dive straightforward.

Two safety nets over the propeller reduce the risk of accidental contact with the blades. This is a meaningful safety feature, especially if you are diving around kelp, fishing line, or other entanglement hazards.

Throttle and control

The K5 uses a proportional throttle, meaning the speed responds gradually to how much you squeeze or press the trigger rather than jumping between fixed speeds. This gives you smooth acceleration and the ability to hold a comfortable cruising pace.

It also supports cruise control, so you can lock in a speed without holding the trigger continuously. On a longer run across open water, that reduces hand fatigue noticeably.

Camera mount

An action camera quick-mount is included, along with an anti-drop rope. If you carry a GoPro or similar camera, you can attach it directly to the scooter rather than holding it separately. The anti-drop rope is a sensible backup in case the mount releases at depth.

Who this suits and who it does not

The K5 is a good fit if you are a recreational diver or snorkeler who wants to move faster and farther without exhausting yourself, and who values being able to travel with the gear without checking a bag.

It is also straightforward enough that less experienced swimmers and snorkelers can use it. The three-speed setup and proportional throttle mean you do not need to be a strong diver to control it.

It is not aimed at technical or cave divers who need sustained high-thrust performance, redundant battery systems, or the kind of rugged, serviceable build that professional-grade DPVs provide. If you are planning long penetration dives or working in demanding conditions regularly, a purpose-built technical DPV would be a better fit.

Similarly, if you need two full dives back to back with no surface interval, one battery will not cover both. A second scooter or a shore-power charging stop would be needed.
