The Yamaha RDS200 Seascooter is a diver propulsion vehicle (DPV), a handheld motorized unit you grip and let pull you through the water, covering more ground with less effort than swimming alone.

It is built for recreational divers and snorkelers who want to explore wider areas on a single dive or simply enjoy the ride.

What It Does Underwater

The RDS200 pulls you at up to 2.0 mph (3.2 km/h), which is meaningfully faster than a comfortable swimming pace. That extra speed lets you cover a reef or wreck site that would otherwise take multiple dives to explore.

Its depth rating of 65 feet (20 meters) fits comfortably within recreational dive limits. If you stay above that ceiling, which most recreational divers do on typical reef or wreck dives, the RDS200 is rated for the conditions you will actually encounter.

Battery and Run Time

The scooter runs on a 12V 7.5Ah sealed lead-acid battery with a runtime of up to one hour under normal use. In practice, runtime depends on how hard the motor is working, so fighting a current will shorten that window.

Recharging takes 4 to 6 hours, which means one charge per day of diving if you are on a day trip. The battery also requires occasional maintenance, which is typical of lead-acid chemistry. If you want back-to-back sessions without a long break, Yamaha sells a spare battery separately.

Size, Weight, and Handling

At 13 lbs (6 kg) with the battery installed, the RDS200 is on the lighter end for a motorized scooter, which makes it easier to carry to the water's edge and load onto a boat.

The dimensions are 24" x 15.2" x 12.3" (612mm x 385mm x 312mm), so it is a substantial piece of kit. Plan for it to take up meaningful space in a gear bag or vehicle.

Buoyancy: One Detail Worth Knowing

The RDS200 has a removable buoyancy control chamber and is designed specifically for salt water use. In salt water, it sits with positive buoyancy, meaning it floats if you let go.

In fresh water, buoyancy drops noticeably and the scooter may slowly sink. If you plan to use it in a lake or quarry, that is an important limitation to weigh before buying.

The GoPro Mount

A built-in mount accepts GoPro Hero 3, 3+, 4, 5, 6, and 7 housings, as well as other camera housings that share the same mounting system. The camera itself is not included. For divers who already shoot underwater video, this removes the need for a separate camera arm or tray on the scooter.

Who Should Consider the RDS200

This scooter suits a recreational diver or snorkeler who wants to extend their range on dives shallower than 65 feet, particularly in salt water environments like ocean reefs or coastal sites.

It is designed for ages 16 and up.

It is not the right choice if your diving is primarily in fresh water, since the buoyancy behavior changes significantly. It is also not suited for technical or deep diving, where depth ratings well beyond 65 feet are typically required.

If one battery per day is enough for your style of diving, the RDS200 is a self-contained, relatively portable option. If you want full-day back-to-back use, factor in the cost and logistics of a spare battery from the start.
