The XS Scuba Neuro Knife is a traditional leg-mounted dive knife aimed at recreational divers who want a capable, no-nonsense cutting tool in the water.

If you dive in environments where rope, netting, or fishing line is a realistic hazard, a knife like this belongs on your kit list. This one is worth a close look if you prefer a full-size blade over a compact cutter.

The Blade

The Neuro Knife runs a 4.5-inch (114mm) blade made from 304 stainless steel, a grade chosen specifically for its corrosion resistance in saltwater. It will still need rinsing and occasional drying after dives, but it holds up better than cheaper steel in marine conditions.

The blade is double-sided in function, if not in sharpening. One side carries a straight edge for clean cuts. The other side runs a 2-inch (51mm) serrated section toward the base, which bites into rope and webbing far more effectively than a plain edge can.

The tip is a clip point style, meaning the spine curves down to meet the edge near the tip. This gives the point a finer profile, useful when you need to pierce material or work in a tight spot rather than just slash through it.

There is also a dedicated line notch cutter built into the blade. This is the detail that matters most in an entanglement emergency: you hook monofilament or thin line into the notch and pull, and it parts cleanly without requiring a sawing motion.

Construction and Strength

The blade is full tang, meaning the steel runs the entire length of the handle rather than stopping at the base. This matters because a partial tang is a weak point; a full tang knife will not separate at the handle under load.

The tang protrudes from the back of the handle intentionally, giving you a small hammering surface for situations where you need to tap, pry, or strike an object underwater.

The handle itself is plastic, ridged for grip, and fitted with a wide hilt guard that keeps your hand from sliding forward onto the blade when pushing or cutting against resistance. Plastic is lighter than rubber or composite alternatives and holds up well to repeated saltwater exposure.

One color note worth knowing: the black model only comes with a black chromium coating on the blade. The standard model does not have this coating. Neither is more or less corrosion-resistant at the steel level, but the coating gives the black version a different surface finish.

Sheath and Mounting

The sheath is a self-locking design that produces an audible click when the knife seats fully. That click is genuinely useful: you know the knife is secured without looking at it, which matters when you are gearing up on a rocking boat.

The kit includes two rubber leg straps, each 22 inches (560mm) long, with quick-release buckles. These wrap around your lower leg or calf and hold the sheath in place. There is also an attachment point on the back of the handle for a secondary lanyard or tether if you want added security against loss.

The overall assembled knife is 9 inches (228mm) long, so this is a full-size tool. It sits on the leg rather than clipping to a BCD strap or console, which keeps it accessible but does add some bulk.

The Neuro Knife is a practical fit for recreational divers who want a multi-function cutting tool rather than a minimal emergency cutter. The combination of straight edge, serrated edge, line notch, clip point tip, and hammer butt covers most situations you would realistically encounter on a recreational dive.

It is a good match if you dive in areas with kelp, fishing line, or rope hazards, or if you do any boat diving where a knife doubles as a general-purpose tool.

It is not the right choice if you want something compact and low-profile. A 9-inch leg knife is noticeable on your kit, and some divers prefer a small sheathed cutter on their BCD for tidier rigging. If that is your preference, a shorter blade mounted higher on the body would serve you better.

Technical divers working in overhead environments or with complex rigging may also want a second, backup cutting tool in addition to something like this, rather than relying on a single leg-mounted knife.
