What It Actually Does

A pinpointer works differently from a standard metal detector with a search coil. This one uses Pulse Induction (PI) technology, which is well suited to wet, mineralized environments like saltwater beaches and riverbeds. PI ignores most of the false signals that highly mineralized soil and saltwater can cause, which means fewer frustrating false alarms when you are searching in the water.

Depth Rating: Read This Before You Dive With It

This pinpointer carries a 100-foot waterproof rating, but there is a firm condition attached: the battery compartment cover must be fully and tightly sealed before you go underwater. Any gap will let water in and damage the unit.

There is also a mismatch worth knowing. The IP rating is IP54, which is a standard that covers splash resistance and dust protection, not full submersion to 100 feet. Before relying on this pinpointer at depth, check the seal carefully every single dive and treat the waterproofing as something you maintain, not something you can take for granted.

If you are a diver planning to use this regularly at depth, that gap between the stated IP54 rating and the 100-foot claim is worth factoring into your decision.

Sensitivity and What It Will Find

The pinpointer performs well on common metal objects like coins and rings. The manufacturer is straightforward about one limitation: very small items or micro-gold may not trigger detection unless the tip is extremely close to the target. Do not expect it to pick up fine gold flakes or tiny fragments reliably.

It also does not support metal discrimination. That means it responds equally to all metal types. You will not be able to filter out iron or foil and focus only on silver or gold. Every signal means something metal is there, but you will not know what until you dig.

How You Turn It On

There are no buttons to press. You activate the unit by flipping it over, a gesture-based on and off. An LED light helps you read the detection signal in low visibility or murky water. A low battery indicator is built in so you are not caught out mid-session.

It runs on battery power. Check the packaging for the battery type before your first outing.

Size, Weight, and Carry

At under half a kilogram, it is light enough to carry comfortably on a dive or a long beach session. The yellow color helps you spot it quickly in sand or shallow water. A belt ring and wrist strap are included so you can keep it secured to your body while you search.

Where It Works Well, and Where It Does Not
