The Sherwood Avid Phantom is a jacket-style buoyancy control device (BCD) aimed squarely at recreational divers who want a reliable, well-fitted piece of kit that handles weighting, buoyancy, and gear attachment without fuss.

What Jacket Style Means for You

A jacket-style BCD wraps the air cell around your torso rather than concentrating it at your back. When the Avid Phantom inflates, air surrounds you on the sides and front as well as the rear, which keeps you upright and stable at the surface with very little effort.

That surface stability is genuinely useful: you can relax, breathe, and sort yourself out after a dive without having to fin to stay face-up.

The trade-off, which is worth knowing, is that a jacket can push you slightly forward-leaning underwater if you are over-inflated. The Avid Phantom is described as balanced for a horizontal swimming position, which helps, but dialing in your weighting properly still matters.

Lift Capacity by Size

The forward buckle placement is designed to make loading the weight pockets easier, and the larger handles on the CQR-3 are a practical detail if you dive with thick gloves, where grip on smaller hardware becomes genuinely difficult.

Buoyancy Control and Dump Valves

Controlling your buoyancy underwater means being able to add and release air quickly. The Avid Phantom gives you three dump valves:

• Right shoulder: overpressure relief and pull dump handle
• Left shoulder: cable-activated pull dump, triggered via the inflator hose
• Lower left of the air cell: a third dump for venting air when you are feet-up or in an unusual position

Having dumps at both shoulders and at the lower cell means you can release air regardless of your body angle, which matters when you are ascending or repositioning mid-dive.

The power inflator uses a 3/8-inch threaded low-pressure quick-disconnect hose, a standard fitting compatible with most regulator setups.

Fit and Adjustment

A BCD that fits poorly is uncomfortable and affects your trim in the water. The Avid Phantom addresses this with a system of adjustable straps across the torso, waist, and chest.

The seams are RF (radio frequency) welded rather than stitched, which creates an airtight bond and reduces the chance of slow leaks developing over time.

For gear attachment, the Avid Phantom has six stainless steel D-rings, multiple clips, and two zippered side pockets for accessories like slates, SMBs (surface marker buoys), or a small reel.

Who This BCD Is Not For

The Avid Phantom is a recreational jacket-style BCD. It is not designed for technical diving, where a back-inflate or wing-and-backplate setup is generally preferred for horizontal trim and the ability to run stage cylinders.

If you are planning to dive with twin cylinders or move toward decompression diving, this is not the right platform. For straightforward recreational diving, including warm-water travel and local diving in a wetsuit, it covers the ground well.

The size range runs XS through 3-5XL, which is broader than many BCDs in this category, making it a realistic option for divers who struggle to find gear that fits at the smaller or larger ends of the scale.
