Cressi Travelight BCD: A Jacket-Style Travel BCD Built to Pack Small

The Cressi Travelight is a jacket-style BCD designed specifically for divers who travel and want to avoid checking a heavy bag or paying overweight fees at the airport.

If you are a recreational diver who takes trips, either liveaboards, resort diving, or fly-and-dive weekends, and you are tired of lugging a bulky BCD through airports, this is the product to look at closely.

What "jacket style" means for you

A jacket-style BCD wraps the air bladder around your sides and back. When you inflate it, buoyancy comes from all around your torso, not just from behind. This gives you a stable, upright position on the surface, which is reassuring after a dive, and a reasonably balanced trim underwater for recreational depths.

If you have been diving with a jacket BCD for years, the Travelight will feel immediately familiar. There is no learning curve.

Where the weight savings actually come from

Cressi trimmed the weight by making deliberate material choices rather than stripping out features. The bladder uses internally urethane-laminated 420/210-denier nylon, a construction that holds up to pressure and abrasion while staying lighter than heavier-coated fabrics.

The D-rings are alloy rather than stainless steel. There are four of them. Alloy is lighter, though it is worth knowing it is not as corrosion-resistant as stainless, so a good freshwater rinse after every salt dive matters more with this BCD than with a stainless-fitted one.

The back pad is flexible and padded, which protects your back and holds the cylinder securely via twin cam bands, but it is designed to fold down quickly so the whole BCD packs into a small carry bag.

The result is a BCD that weighs 5 to 6.2 lbs (2.3 to 2.8 kg) depending on size. That is a meaningful saving compared to a typical full-featured jacket BCD.

Lift capacity by size

Lift varies significantly across the size range, so check that your size gives you enough for your cylinder and exposure suit combination:

If you dive in a thick wetsuit or drysuit and need significant lift, the smaller sizes may leave you short. An XS at 13.5 lbs is fine for warm-water diving in a shorty, but not for a 7mm suit with a steel cylinder. Match your size to your actual diving conditions, not just your body size.

The integrated weight system

Carrying lead in the BCD rather than on a separate weight belt is standard for most recreational divers, and the Travelight handles this properly despite being a travel product.

The releasable pockets hold up to 20 lbs (9 kg) total, split as 10 lbs (4.5 kg) per side. These use a lock-and-quick-release system, so you can ditch weight in an emergency with a firm pull.

There are also two rear trim weight pockets that hold an additional 10 lbs (4.5 kg) non-releasable. These are for fine-tuning your horizontal trim underwater, not for emergency ditching, so only put weight there that you are comfortable keeping on if you need to surface quickly.

The total weight capacity across all pockets is 30 lbs (13.6 kg). For most warm-water recreational divers that is more than enough.

Dump valves and inflation

Controlling your buoyancy precisely depends on being able to add or release air quickly from wherever you are positioned in the water. The Travelight gives you three ways to do that:

• Left shoulder pull dump, integrated into the inflator hose, the one you will use most often when ascending.
• Right shoulder dump, useful when you are more vertical or need a fast release from the top of the bladder.
• Rear kidney dump, for releasing air when you are in a more horizontal position.

There is also manual deflation through the inflator assembly itself. Three dump valves on a travel BCD is a full feature set, not a compromise.

The inflator is the Cressi Power Inflator with a cable-activated pull dump. It connects to your regulator's low-pressure port via the included 3/8-inch low-pressure hose.

Fit and adjustment

The harness uses adjustable shoulder straps, a chest strap, and a waist strap, all with squeeze-style side-release buckles. These are the same style of buckle found on most recreational BCDs, so the operation is familiar.

A padded hook-and-loop cummerbund wraps around the waist for additional security and comfort. This is worth noting if you have had a BCD shift on you in current or surge: the cummerbund keeps things snug without feeling restrictive.

The torso straps are adjustable, which means you can dial in the fit properly rather than relying on size alone. That matters more with a travel BCD, since you may be renting cylinders of different sizes or wearing different exposure suits on different trips.

Two zippered pockets

There is one large zippered pocket on each side. These are useful for carrying a dive slate, a small torch, a surface marker buoy, or other accessories you want close to hand. On a travel dive, where you may not have a familiar setup or a buddy to pass things to, having accessible pockets is genuinely convenient.

Is the Travelight right for you?

This BCD makes the most sense for a recreational diver who travels regularly and dives primarily in warm water with an aluminium cylinder and a thin exposure suit. It gives you a familiar jacket fit, a proper weight system, and full dump valve coverage, in a package that packs down and saves weight in your luggage.

It is not the best choice if you dive cold water regularly in thick neoprene or a drysuit, where the smaller sizes may not provide enough lift and the alloy hardware requires more careful maintenance against corrosion.

It is also not aimed at technical divers or anyone wanting a backplate-and-wing setup for back-inflation trim. This is a jacket BCD, and it behaves like one.
