The SeaLife SportDiver Ultra is a hard underwater housing that lets you take your smartphone diving to 130 feet (40 meters), with physical controls, a dedicated app, and a dual leak-alarm system designed to keep your phone genuinely safe.

If you are a recreational diver who already shoots decent photos with your phone on land and wants to bring that camera underwater without buying a dedicated dive camera, this housing is built for exactly that situation.

Phone Compatibility: Check This First

Before anything else, confirm your phone fits. The SportDiver works with:

• iPhone: iPhone 10 through iPhone 17 Pro Max
• Samsung Galaxy: S20 and newer
• Android: Most other current Android models

The internal cavity measures 6.49 x 3.15 x 0.38 inches (165 x 80 x 9.7 mm), so unusually large or thick phones may not seat properly. If your phone is borderline, check SeaLife's compatibility list before ordering.

Also worth knowing upfront: not every camera feature on your phone will be accessible inside the housing. The telephoto lens, for instance, is supported on Android but not all iPhone models. Portrait mode (background blur) only works on multi-lens iPhones. Some settings will appear greyed out depending on your specific phone and what other settings are active. This is not a flaw in the housing; it is a real-world limit of controlling a phone camera through a third-party app, and SeaLife is honest about it.

The Housing Itself: What It Is Made Of

The body is polycarbonate, with hardware in 304-316 stainless steel and hard-anodized T6061-grade aluminum. The lens port is optical glass with an anti-reflective coating on the inner surface. The main display window is optical-grade polycarbonate.

The door seals with a TPE rubber O-ring and a cam-lock latch. Two additional silicone O-rings seal the vacuum check port. Silicone lube for the O-rings is included.

The whole assembly weighs 680 grams (about 24 oz) with batteries, filter, and grip tabs installed, before you add the phone. In the water, the housing alone is slightly positively buoyant at 2.8 oz (80g) positive. Subtract your phone's weight to get the real number in your hands. Depending on your phone, the combined rig will be close to neutral, which makes it easier to hold steady for a shot without fighting the water.

Leak Protection: The Part That Actually Matters

Putting a phone worth several hundred dollars into any underwater housing is a calculated risk. SeaLife addresses this with two independent systems.

• Vacuum pressure alarm: Before you dive, you apply a vacuum to the sealed housing. If the housing holds pressure, the LED shows solid green. If pressure drops, it flashes red. This tells you there is a seal problem before you enter the water.
• Internal moisture sensor: If water somehow gets inside during a dive, a sensor detects it and triggers an on-screen warning, an audio alarm, and an LED alert simultaneously.

Each housing is individually depth-tested at the factory before shipping. That is a meaningful step for a product in this category.

The O-ring and latch system is straightforward, but like any dive housing, it requires attention. Inspect and lubricate the O-ring before every dive trip. Replacement O-ring kits are available (part number SL40010).

Controls and Handling Underwater

No cables or buttons physically contact the phone. The housing connects to your phone entirely via Bluetooth Low Energy 5, which means the seal is never interrupted by a wire pass-through. The housing runs on two AAA batteries rated for over 50 hours of continuous use, so a week of diving on a single set is realistic.

The physical controls are sized for gloved hands: a large shutter lever on the front, plus rear buttons for mode switching, zoom, focus adjustment, playback, and settings. That layout matters more than it might seem. Trying to navigate a touchscreen through a housing window underwater, without gloves, in low visibility, is frustrating. Having dedicated physical buttons removes that problem entirely.

Zoom runs from 1x to 10x in 0.5x increments. Focus can be set to automatic or manual from the housing controls.

The SportDiver App

The housing works through SeaLife's own SportDiver app, available free on the App Store and Google Play with no in-app purchases. The app uses your phone's native camera technology rather than a separate imaging pipeline, which means you keep the quality your phone's camera is already capable of.

The app runs four modes:

• Photo: Single image capture per shutter press.
• Video: Press to start, press again to stop. Supports 4K, 1080p, and 720p resolution.
• Settings: Access camera controls relevant to your phone model.
• Playback: Full-size review with a vertical thumbnail strip. Videos play automatically when selected.

All files save directly to your phone's photo library, so your shots are immediately ready to share or edit in any app you already use.

The settings available differ between iOS and Android:

Android users get more manual control over exposure, which is useful for creative shooting. iPhone users get tint adjustment, which can help fine-tune color in mixed-light conditions.

The Color-Correction Filter

Seawater absorbs red and orange wavelengths quickly as you go deeper, which is why underwater photos often look blue-green without correction. The SportDiver includes a removable red color-correction filter that clips onto the lens frame and can be attached or removed while you are already in the water. A safety tether prevents it from floating away if it comes loose.

The filter helps most in the 15-to-40-foot range in clear water. In very shallow water or with a video light, you may prefer to shoot without it. Having the option to switch mid-dive is genuinely useful.

Mounting and Accessories

The housing has three standard 1/4-20 tripod threads, one on the bottom and one on each side, so it mounts directly to SeaLife's own Sea Dragon lights or to any tray or arm system using standard tripod threads. If you plan to add an underwater video light later, this housing is already set up for it without an adapter.

A padded lanyard with a swiveled clip is included. There is also an anti-fog capsule called the Moisture Muncher that sits inside the housing to absorb residual moisture and prevent condensation on the lens port from the inside.

What to Keep in Mind

The SportDiver is rated to 130 feet (40 meters), which covers the full recreational dive range. It is not intended for technical or decompression diving.

Operating temperature runs from 33 to 110°F (1 to 38°C). Cold-water divers in drysuit territory should be aware that the lower end of that range is essentially just above freezing; the housing is not designed for ice diving or extremely cold conditions.

If you are a serious underwater photographer already invested in a dedicated camera system, the SportDiver is not a replacement. It is a capable, well-engineered housing for the camera most recreational divers already carry everywhere.
