The Scubapro Seawing Supernova is an open-heel split-style fin built around one idea: converting your kick into forward motion as efficiently as possible, regardless of how hard you are working.

What Makes This Fin Different

Most fins ask you to adapt your kick to the blade. The Seawing Supernova works the other way around.

Two systems work together to do this. The first is Pivot Control Technology (PCT), a hinge built into the blade that pre-sets the angle at which the blade meets the water. That angle sits in the 40-to-50-degree range, which is where a blade generates the most forward thrust per unit of effort.

The second system is the Auto-Adjust central panel, a flexible membrane in the middle of the blade that responds to how hard you are actually kicking. Kick gently and it softens the angle of attack, so cruising stays comfortable and unhurried. Kick hard and it stiffens into a more aggressive angle, so your full effort goes somewhere. The two systems work in tandem, meaning the blade is always close to its optimal position rather than being locked into one compromise setting.

In practice, this matters most when your workload changes mid-dive: picking up pace to catch a current edge, slowing down to hover over a reef, or pushing through surge without burning your legs.

Blade Shape and Maneuverability

The blade is vented and articulated at a mid-point joint, which reduces drag on the recovery stroke (the upward phase of your kick, where a stiff blade would push you backward slightly). That is the same principle behind most high-performance fins at this level.

What is specific to the Supernova is the addition of twin-tip winglets at the blade tips. These are designed to give you more purchase during frog kicks and alternate kicks, the techniques that technical and cave divers rely on for precise maneuvering in confined spaces, and that skilled recreational divers use to avoid disturbing sediment or coral. If you already use these kick styles regularly, the winglets are a meaningful addition over the previous Seawing Nova generation.

Construction and Materials

The blade and foot pocket are molded as two separate pieces, then assembled. This two-piece design is one of the Supernova's most practical features: it lets you separate the blade from the foot pocket for packing, which makes a real difference when you are fitting fins into a dive bag or carry-on.

Both pieces are made from Monprene, a premium elastomer known for combining flexibility with durability. It handles repeated use and exposure to salt water without the brittleness that cheaper materials develop over time.

A small key-fob style tool is included specifically for assembling and disassembling the two pieces. It is a minor detail, but it means you are not improvising with a coin or a screwdriver at the dive site.

Fit and Foot Pocket

The Seawing Supernova is sold as an open-heel fin with the foot pocket and blade pre-assembled. The open-heel design means you wear a dive boot inside it, and the strap holds everything in place. This is the standard setup for cold-water diving and for any situation where you want to walk on rocky or uneven surfaces before entering the water.

The strap is a heavy-duty bungee design with micro-adjustment capability, so you can dial in the fit across different boot thicknesses without fiddling with a traditional buckle. Extended grip pads on the foot pocket give you non-skid traction on wet boat decks and ladders.

If you dive in warm water without boots, Scubapro sells a separate full-foot pocket (sold separately, SKU: SCPSSFP) that fits the same blade. This means you are not buying a completely different fin for a warm-water liveaboard trip; you swap the foot pocket and keep the blade.

If you are a brand-new diver who is still developing your kick and mostly diving calm, shallow sites, this level of engineering is more fin than you need right now. A simpler, more forgiving blade will serve you better while your technique develops.

The open-heel format also assumes you are using dive boots. If you only ever dive in warm, sandy-bottomed tropical water and prefer a snug full-foot pocket, the optional conversion is available, but a full-foot fin designed from the ground up for that purpose might fit more naturally.
