Scubapro S-Tek Fin: Open-Heel Technical Fin Built for Power and Trim Control

The Scubapro S-Tek Fin is a full-sized open-heel fin designed specifically for technical diving. If you are running deco gases, wearing a drysuit and thick undersuit, carrying stage or sidemount cylinders, or regularly pushing into conditions where a recreational fin simply runs out of authority, this is the product category you need to be shopping.

Blade Design and What It Means in the Water

The blade is pre-angled at 30 degrees, which positions it closer to the natural angle of your foot during a flutter kick. Less energy is wasted correcting that angle on every stroke, and the kick cycle becomes more efficient as a result.

The blade material is Monprene, a thermoplastic elastomer chosen for its combination of rigidity and resilience. It holds its shape under load without becoming brittle in cold water, which matters when you are kicking hard at depth in a drysuit.

The blade uses a vented, clean-water design. Venting allows water to pass through the blade on the recovery stroke, reducing the drag that would otherwise work against you as you bring the fin back up. On the power stroke, the blade generates propulsion cleanly. The net effect is that you get more thrust per unit of effort and less leg fatigue over a long dive.

The Hydra-Loop Leading Edge

The front edge of the blade uses a structure Scubapro calls the Hydra-Loop. It is ramped and reinforced, and its purpose is to increase lateral rigidity across the blade.

For a technical diver, lateral rigidity is directly relevant to alternate kick techniques. A frog kick and a modified flutter both rely on the blade resisting sideways flex at the point of load. A blade that collapses laterally under that load loses efficiency and makes precise kick control harder. The Hydra-Loop is designed to prevent that.

The Removable Stainless Steel Weight Plate System

This is one of the features that genuinely separates the S-Tek from most recreational fins.

The fin accepts a removable stainless steel weight plate, which lets you adjust the fin's buoyancy to suit your exposure suit and configuration. In a drysuit with heavy undergarments, fins that are too buoyant will constantly try to float your feet up, disrupting trim and forcing you to fight for a horizontal position. Adding weight directly to the fin corrects that without changing anything else in your rig.

The plate is removable, so if you dive in a wetsuit in warmer conditions, you can pull it out and run the fin lighter. One fin, two configurations.

Modular Two-Part Construction

The S-Tek separates into two pieces: the blade and the foot pocket. They connect via Scubapro's Sure-Lock system, which is designed to assemble and disassemble without tools and to stay locked during a dive.

For travel, this matters practically. Long technical fins are awkward to pack, and breaking them into two shorter components makes them much easier to fit into a bag or check as luggage.

It also means that if one component wears out before the other, you are not replacing the entire fin.

Foot Pocket and Strap

The foot pocket is open-heel, designed to be worn over a dive boot. The strap is a heavy-duty bungee, which provides a secure fit without pressure points and adjusts quickly at the surface or on a boat. If you are donning fins on a rocking dive platform or at a surface swim, a bungee strap is faster and more reliable than a traditional buckle.

The open-heel design means the S-Tek will accommodate a range of boot thicknesses, which is useful if you dive in different thermal conditions across the year.

Who This Fin Is For and Who It Is Not

The S-Tek is built for technical divers who need precise kick control, trim-adjustable buoyancy, and a blade stiff enough to perform under load in demanding conditions. Cave divers, wreck penetration divers, decompression divers, and anyone regularly diving in a drysuit will find the design decisions here directly relevant to their diving.

If you are a recreational diver doing warm-water reef dives in a wetsuit, the S-Tek is more fin than your diving requires. A lighter, simpler open-heel fin would serve you just as well and be easier to travel with.
