Scubapro Hydros Pro Women's BCD with Air 2: Back-Inflation BCD Built Around a Completely Different Kind of Harness

The Scubapro Hydros Pro Women's BCD is a back-inflation, weight-integrated buoyancy compensator built specifically for the female torso, and it is genuinely unlike most BCDs on the market.

If you are a recreational diver who has spent time in rental gear or a basic entry-level BCD and you are ready to invest in something that fits properly, travels well, and will last for years, this is worth understanding in detail.

The Harness: Why It Is Different

Most BCDs are built using a cut-and-sew process: layers of fabric, foam, and backing stitched together into a harness. The Hydros Pro does something fundamentally different.

Scubapro injection-molds the harness components from a soft thermoplastic elastomer called Monprene, then assembles them mechanically. There is no stitching holding the core structure together. This matters for a few practical reasons.

First, the gel conforms to your body rather than holding a fixed shape. That means no pressure points on your shoulders, and the load distributes more evenly across your torso.

Second, Monprene absorbs almost no water. After a dive, a traditional fabric harness stays wet and heavy for hours. The Hydros Pro dries quickly, which is a real advantage when you are packing up between dives or catching an early flight home.

Third, because the harness is modular and mechanically assembled, virtually every component can be replaced without stitching, including the buckles. This is not a BCD you will outgrow or discard when one part wears out.

Fit for Women

The Hydros Pro is shaped for a female body, not simply a scaled-down unisex design.

The Torso Flex Zone follows the curve of your upper back and auto-adjusts for different torso lengths. The sternum strap rides on a rail so you can position it exactly where it sits comfortably. The shoulder straps swivel so they naturally follow your body's angle rather than fighting it.

The crotch strap mount accepts either a single 2-inch (50 mm) webbing or dual 1-inch (25 mm) webbing, so you can choose the configuration that feels most secure for your body and diving style.

Back Inflation and Buoyancy

The air cell is behind you, not wrapped around your sides. For recreational diving, this means you float face-down at the surface rather than upright, which feels less natural to some divers at first but becomes second nature quickly.

The real benefit is streamlining underwater. With the bladder behind you, there is nothing pushing against your chest or sides, and your trim (your horizontal position in the water) tends to be cleaner.

Lift capacity runs from 36 to 40.5 lbs (16.3 to 18.3 kg) depending on size, which is more than sufficient for recreational diving in either warm or cold water with a wetsuit.

A Tri-Bungee System keeps the air cell snug and streamlined when it is not fully inflated, and a Cross-Flow Channel design prevents air from getting trapped across the backpack. You have two dump valves: one on the right shoulder and one at the lower right rear, both with pull cords.

Weight Integration

The Hydros Pro is weight-integrated, meaning you carry lead in pockets on the BCD rather than on a separate weight belt. The releasable weight capacity is 24 lbs (11 kg), and there is an additional non-releasable capacity of 9 lbs (4 kg) for trim weights.

The releasable pockets are the ones you can ditch at the surface in an emergency, so your primary ballast always goes there.

The Air 2 Integrated Alternate Air Source

The Air 2 replaces the standard inflator mechanism on your BCD and adds a second stage regulator (the part you breathe from) built directly into it. That means your inflator and your backup regulator are the same unit, on the same hose.

In a normal dive, you use it exactly as you would any other inflator. If your buddy runs out of air, you hand them the Air 2 and they breathe from it while you share the same tank and ascend together. Because it lives on your left chest where your inflator always is, there is no searching for a dangling octopus in a stressful moment.

The Air 2 uses a downstream demand valve design, which is the simpler, more reliable valve type and requires less maintenance than an upstream design. The housing is molded carbon fiber and techno-polymer, and the complete unit weighs 6.7 oz (190 g). It connects to your first stage regulator (the part that attaches to the tank) via a 3/8-inch threaded low-pressure hose, which is included.

Key Air 2 specifications:

One honest note: some divers prefer a traditional separate octopus because it can be handed off more easily and the donor diver keeps breathing normally from their primary regulator. With the Air 2, the donor breathes from the primary second stage (the one in their mouth) and the out-of-air diver uses the Air 2. That is a different buddy-breathing dynamic than you may have practiced in your certification course, so it is worth knowing before you buy.

Tank Security and Attachment Points

The back plate is over-molded with soft TPE gel over a rigid techno-polymer core. A single "super cinch" tank strap locks your cylinder firmly. An X-Grip system adds five grip pads for extra tank stability, which matters when you are gearing up on a rocking boat.

The BCD has accessory eyelets on both the lumbar and dorsal plates, plus multiple mount points across the harness for clipping on a torch, SMB, or other gear. The shoulder swivel buckles have built-in D-rings for attaching a gauge console or your Air 2 hose. Two stainless steel D-rings sit on the waist strap.

Traveling With It

The Hydros Pro packs flat and comes with travel straps and a backpack large enough to carry your full dive kit. Because the harness dries so quickly, you are not stuffing wet gear into a bag. For divers who travel frequently, this is a meaningful practical advantage over most fabric-harness BCDs.

Who This BCD Is Not For

If you are a brand-new diver still deciding whether you will stick with the sport, the Hydros Pro is a significant investment and probably not where you should start.

If you dive primarily in cold water with a thick drysuit and need maximum lift, check the size-specific buoyancy figures carefully against your actual ballast requirements before buying.

And if you are a technical diver who needs a specific wing-and-backplate configuration with a steel plate, this recreational BCD is not designed for that role.

For a recreational diver who dives regularly, travels with gear, and wants a BCD that fits properly, lasts for many years, and is genuinely repairable rather than disposable, the Hydros Pro is one of the most thoughtfully engineered options available.
