The Blade and How It Works

The blade itself is built from a techno-polymer, a reinforced plastic that is stiffer and lighter than the rubber used in older fin designs. Stiffness matters because a rigid blade transfers more of your leg's force into thrust rather than bending and absorbing it.

Running through the blade is what Oceanic calls the Power-X System, a strip of more flexible material that acts like a tendon through the middle of the fin. The idea is that this strip bends during the downstroke, stores a small amount of energy, and releases it at the start of the upstroke. Whether you notice it consciously or not, it is meant to make each kick cycle feel more connected and less like you are starting from zero on each stroke.

There is also a Power Channel, a groove or rail of softer material along the back edge of the blade. Its job is to direct water off the trailing edge cleanly rather than letting it spill sideways, which is how a fin loses efficiency at the end of a kick.

Fit and Adjustment

The Manta RAY uses an open-heel design, meaning it fits over a dive bootie rather than directly on a bare foot. This makes it a three-season and cold-water fin, compatible with both thin 3mm booties and thicker neoprene up to the kind worn in cold or drysuit diving.

The heel strap uses Oceanic's Easy Buckle Adjustment (EBA) system, which gives you more than 2 inches (5 cm) of adjustment range. That is a meaningful amount of range, enough to move between a thin summer bootie and a thick winter bootie without swapping straps or carrying tools.

The strap itself uses a soft-pad heel and a finger-loop rather than a traditional spring strap or hard buckle tab. The finger-loop is designed so you can grab and release the fin even while wearing thick gloves, which matters in cold water when dexterity is limited.

Weight and Build

The pair weighs 4.1 pounds total. That is on the heavier side for travel but reasonable for a fin with a reinforced blade. If you are packing light for a liveaboard, that is worth noting. If you are diving locally and carrying gear to the boat, it will not be an issue.

Who This Fin Is Not For
