It is not aimed at technical divers pushing depth limits, and it is not a professional cinematography rig. What it is: a capable, self-contained 360-degree shooting system that covers most recreational dive profiles and handles the post-dive editing work through an app rather than a desktop suite.

What "360-degree" actually means for your dive footage

A conventional action camera points one direction. You have to aim it, and if you aim it wrong, the moment is gone.

The X4 captures a full sphere around itself simultaneously, using two lenses on opposite sides of the body. After the dive, you choose your framing inside the Insta360 app, essentially pointing a virtual camera at whatever part of the scene you want. You can do this for the entire clip, or let Insta360's AI subject-detection do it automatically.

This matters underwater because you are often focused on buoyancy, your buddy, or the subject you are approaching, not on pointing a camera. The X4 records everything happening around it, so you are not choosing between the dive and the shot.

The camera itself

The X4 body measures 123.6 x 46 x 37.6 mm and weighs 203 g without the case. It fits a 2.5-inch touchscreen with Gorilla Glass on the back, and the controls are straightforward enough that you can adjust settings with a gloved hand.

The main shooting specs worth understanding:

• 8K 360 video (7680x3840) at up to 30fps: maximum detail, best for slow or medium-paced scenes like reef exploration or wreck swim-throughs.
• 5.7K 360 video at up to 60fps: the practical sweet spot for most diving, giving you smooth motion and strong resolution without filling your card as fast as 8K.
• 4K 360 video at up to 100fps: use this when you want slow-motion playback of faster action.
• Single-lens 4K mode at up to 60fps: turns the X4 into a conventional action camera when you want a traditional wide-angle shot rather than a 360-degree one.
• 72MP 360 still photos: enough resolution to crop heavily and still produce a usable image.

The maximum video bitrate is 200Mbps, so use a UHS-I V30 speed class microSD card. Cards up to 1TB are supported.

The f/1.9 aperture and 6-axis gyroscope-based FlowState stabilization both matter underwater. A wider aperture lets in more light in the low-contrast, blue-shifted environment below the surface. The stabilization corrects for surge and your own movement, so footage does not look like it was shot while swimming through a current (even when it was).

Battery capacity is 2290mAh, and Insta360 rates run time at 135 minutes. That covers a generous single dive or, more realistically, two average recreational dives before you need to charge. The camera charges to 80 percent in 38 minutes at 9V 2A, so a surface interval is often enough to top it up between dives.

The Invisible Dive Case

The camera body on its own is waterproof to 10 meters (33 feet). For most recreational diving, that is not enough. The Invisible Dive Case extends that to 50 meters (164 feet), which covers the full recreational dive envelope and then some.

The "invisible" part is not a marketing phrase. The case is designed so that Insta360's stitching software, which joins the two lens images into a single sphere, does not see the housing in the final footage. You get an unobstructed 360-degree image rather than the case frame appearing as a hard edge in the stitch line.

The case carries an IPX8 waterproof rating. It mounts via a 1/4"-20 screw fitting or a 2-prong mount, so it attaches to standard underwater mounting hardware you may already own.

Fitting the camera is straightforward: snap it in before you enter the water, and remove it after. As with any underwater housing, inspecting the seals before each dive is good practice.

The Invisible Selfie Stick

The selfie stick extends from 233 mm (about 9 inches) to 1141 mm (about 45 inches), and the shaft is aluminum alloy. At 360-degree shooting distances, the stick disappears from the stitched image entirely, which is why Insta360 calls it "invisible."

What this produces underwater is a floating, third-person perspective: the camera appears to hang in the water above or behind you with no visible support. For divers, this creates the kind of angle you would normally only get from a second diver with a separate camera.

It also makes group shots practical. At full extension, the camera is far enough away to frame several divers together without any of them needing to hold it at arm's length.

The stick uses a spring-damping extension mechanism rather than a simple twist lock, which makes one-handed deployment easier when you are geared up.

Editing and app compatibility

Raw 360-degree files from the X4 are saved in INSV format (video) and INSP format (photos). These are Insta360's proprietary formats and require either the Insta360 mobile app or the Insta360 Studio desktop software to work with. You cannot simply drop them into a standard video editor without the plugin or conversion step.

For most divers, the mobile app is the primary editing tool. It handles reframing, stabilization, and basic color adjustments. For more involved work, Insta360 Studio and an Adobe Premiere plugin are available.

The app requires reasonably current hardware. On iOS, you need an A12 chip or newer (iPhone XS or later). On Android, compatibility depends on your chipset; Snapdragon 855, Kirin 990, and Exynos 2200 or newer are listed as supported. If you are on an older phone, check compatibility before buying.

Who this bundle suits, and who it does not
