The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is a compact action camera designed for people who shoot in demanding environments: underwater, in low light, at speed, or in cold weather.

If you are a diver, snorkeler, or water sports enthusiast who wants a camera you can take straight into the water without a separate housing, and who wants genuinely good image quality rather than just "good for an action cam," this is worth a serious look.

It is not a dedicated dive camera. It does not have manual white balance controls tuned for reef photography, a red filter system, or a strobe port. If you are a serious underwater photographer who shoots macro or needs precise color science at depth, a dedicated underwater camera rig will serve you better. But if you want one rugged camera that performs well both above and below the surface, the Osmo Action 5 Pro is one of the more capable options in its category.

Sensor and Image Quality

The most meaningful number here is the 1/1.3-inch sensor.

Most action cameras use much smaller sensors, which struggle in low light and produce footage that looks flat or noisy in anything less than bright sunshine. A larger sensor captures more light per pixel, which matters when you are diving below the surface where light drops off quickly, or shooting in early morning or overcast conditions above water.

The sensor uses 2.4-micron pixels and covers a 13.5-stop dynamic range. In practical terms, that means the camera holds detail in both the bright surface light and the darker water below in the same frame, rather than blowing out the highlights or crushing the shadows.

For color, the camera includes a color temperature sensor that adjusts white balance automatically. Underwater, light shifts toward blue-green as depth increases, and the Action 5 Pro compensates for this without filters. It will not fully replace the color correction that a red filter or manual adjustment provides at depth, but it is a genuine improvement over cameras that ignore the problem entirely.

If you want to grade your footage in post, the camera shoots in D-Log M, a flat color profile that preserves more tonal information for editing.

Video Capabilities

The Osmo Action 5 Pro shoots up to 4K video at 120 frames per second, which gives you smooth slow-motion playback at a quarter speed without dropping below a usable resolution.

Still resolution is 40 megapixels, and the camera saves files in JPEG or RAW, giving you options whether you want quick sharing or full editing control.

Stabilization

The Action 5 Pro runs four stabilization modes: RockSteady, RockSteady+, HorizonBalancing, and HorizonSteady.

HorizonSteady is the most aggressive of these. It corrects for roll-axis rotation across a full 360 degrees, meaning the horizon stays level even if the camera tilts significantly. For diving, this is useful when you are finning through surge or shooting from an awkward angle. For surface activities like cycling or skiing, it keeps footage smooth through bumps and turns.

Stronger stabilization modes typically crop the image slightly to give the processor room to work, so you trade a small amount of field of view for the smoothest footage. That is a standard tradeoff across all action cameras, not specific to this one.

Waterproofing and Cold-Weather Performance

The camera carries an IP68 rating to 20 meters without any additional housing.

For recreational diving, that covers the vast majority of dives. Most recreational divers stay above 18 meters on typical reef and wreck dives. If you regularly dive deeper than 20 meters, you would need a compatible dive housing, which is sold separately and not included in this combo.

Battery life is rated at up to 4 hours of recording in normal conditions, dropping to 3.6 hours at -20 degrees Celsius. Cold water and cold air both reduce battery performance in any lithium-ion device, so the fact that DJI publishes a low-temperature figure is useful. For cold-water divers or winter sports use, that figure gives you a realistic baseline rather than a best-case number.

Screens and Controls

The camera has two OLED touchscreens, one on the front and one on the rear. The rear screen is the main control and review screen. The front screen lets you frame yourself when shooting solo or vlogging, without guessing at the angle.

Both screens are described as high brightness, which matters when shooting in direct sunlight where standard LCD screens become difficult to read.

The camera also supports voice control, with reliable recognition within one meter. For situations where your hands are occupied, on a board, on a bike, or in the water, voice commands let you start and stop recording without reaching for the camera.

Audio

The Action 5 Pro supports a direct wireless connection to the DJI Mic 2 and DJI Mic Mini transmitters without needing a separate receiver unit. This is relevant above water for vlogging or surface interviews. Underwater, no external microphone is useful, but the built-in audio records at 48 kHz 16-bit in AAC format, which is a clean standard for video audio.

Storage and Memory

The Standard Combo includes 47GB of built-in storage.

The camera also accepts microSD cards up to UHS-II speed class (V90), which is the fastest widely available microSD standard. At 4K/120fps, you will fill storage quickly, so a fast, high-capacity card is worth having alongside the built-in storage.

Its sensor size and low-light performance set it apart from most action cameras at this form factor. The 20-meter waterproofing without a housing makes it genuinely practical for recreational diving rather than just splash-proof for surface use.

It is not the right tool if your priority is serious underwater still photography, macro work, or dives consistently beyond 20 meters without investing in a housing. For those uses, a dedicated underwater camera system with manual controls, strobes, and a rated housing will produce better results.
