The Dive Rite Hydro Lite is a back-inflation wing-and-harness BCD designed around the principles of technical diving gear, scaled down for single-tank recreational and advanced recreational use.

If you are a diver who has outgrown jacket-style BCDs and wants the trim, control, and durability of a proper plate-and-wing setup without the bulk of a full technical rig, the Hydro Lite is worth a serious look.

What Makes This a Technical-Inspired Design

Most recreational BCDs wrap a bladder around your sides and front. The Hydro Lite puts all the lift behind you in a 360-degree oval wing that wraps the cylinder rather than your torso.

This matters for two reasons. First, your body stays horizontal underwater more naturally, because the buoyancy is positioned along your back rather than pulling you upright. Second, the oval shape is designed so the wing hugs the tank and resists the tendency to fold or trap air in awkward pockets, which can make dumps unpredictable.

Lift Capacity and the Weight System

The wing produces 30 lbs (13.6 kg) of lift, which is well matched to a single aluminum or steel tank with a diver in a thin wetsuit or rash guard. It is not oversized for a single tank, and that is intentional. A correctly sized wing is easier to control precisely than one with excess lift you are constantly fighting.

The integrated weight system holds up to 12 lbs (5.44 kg) total, split across two pockets of up to 6 lbs (2.7 kg) each. Both block and soft weights fit. The retention uses a combination of hook-and-loop and a buckle, so the weights stay put during normal diving but release quickly in an emergency with a clear pull.

By keeping the weight pockets low-profile and eliminating large external holsters, Dive Rite avoids the bulk that makes some integrated weight systems feel ungainly. The result is a cleaner silhouette both in and out of the water.

Harness and Fit

The harness uses 2-inch (5 cm) shoulder and waist webbing, which is the same standard width used across technical diving systems. That means any D-rings, bolt snaps, or accessories you already own or want to add will fit without adapters.

Four stainless steel D-rings sit on the chest and waist belt, giving you attachment points for an SMB, a torch, a slate, or whatever else you typically carry.

Fit adjustments include:

• Torso-adjustable shoulder straps with squeeze-style side-release buckles
• Quick-release chest strap for easy donning and doffing
• Latch-style stainless steel waist buckle for a secure, positive lock
• 1.5-inch (3.8 cm) crotch strap to prevent the harness from riding up

Lumbar, hip, and shoulder pads are included. The harness comes in multiple sizes, with enough range to accommodate in-between fits.

Tank Attachment

The Hydro Lite uses dual tank straps plus a height adjustment strap, which is more than most recreational BCDs provide and reflects the technical lineage of the design.

The top strap uses Dive Rite's 2-inch stainless steel non-marring roller buckle cam strap, which cinches firmly and does not scratch the cylinder. The bottom strap is a hook-and-loop retainer, lighter and simpler, designed to stabilize the tank without adding unnecessary hardware weight.

Inflator and Dump System

Inflation and deflation use a power inflator on the left shoulder, connected via a standard 3/8-inch threaded quick-disconnect hose. An over-pressure valve with a pull dump sits on the lower left of the wing.

Having the dump at the lower left means you can vent air from the wing while horizontal without needing to roll or reach awkwardly, which matters when you are trying to hold trim during a stop.

Materials and Construction

The outer bag is 600-denier polyester, which is a heavy, abrasion-resistant fabric. The inner bladder is 210-denier nylon laminate, RF welded rather than sewn at the seams. RF welding fuses the material rather than stitching through it, which eliminates the needle holes that can become weak points over time.

The Hydro Lite is made in the USA, using the same material standards as the rest of the Dive Rite line. For a BCD you intend to use for many years across many trips, that construction approach matters more than it might seem on a spec sheet.

Who This Is Not For

The Hydro Lite is designed specifically for warm-water single-tank diving. If you regularly dive cold water in a thick wetsuit or drysuit, the 30 lbs of lift may not be enough to compensate for the added negative buoyancy of heavy exposure protection and a steel tank.

It is also not the right choice if you are new to diving and still developing your buoyancy skills. Back-inflation wings reward divers who can already maintain a horizontal trim. In the early stages of learning, a jacket-style BCD is more forgiving.

And if you are moving into true technical diving with doubles or a sidemount configuration, you will want a different platform. The Hydro Lite is built for one tank, and that is its intended scope.
