How the Blade Actually Works

The Maui uses a dual-material composite blade: two rigid plastic side rails run along the outer edges, and a softer, more elastic rubber layer sits over the centre.

When you kick, the rigid rails channel water inward toward that flexible centre section. The centre then bends and snaps back, creating what Cressi calls a "spoon effect": a cupped shape that pushes a concentrated column of water behind you rather than letting it scatter.

The result is that the blade does more of the work per kick. You do not need to drive it hard to feel it moving you forward. That matters on longer dives, or if your legs tire easily.

The blade is non-vented, meaning there are no holes or slots cut through it. Vented blades reduce resistance on the recovery stroke but can bleed off some power on the drive stroke. A solid blade like this one keeps all that surface area working for propulsion, which suits steady, moderate kicking better than rapid flutter styles.

The Fit System

The Maui uses an elastic bungee strap (EBS) rather than a traditional buckle strap. Bungee straps let you pull the fin on and off in seconds, even with cold hands or gloves, and they self-adjust to your foot rather than needing a buckle set to a fixed position.

The strap is fabric-covered, which protects the elastic core from UV exposure and salt degradation over time. Bare elastic straps can dry out and crack; the covering extends the strap's working life noticeably.

Cressi also added a cleat adjustment on the strap, which is a small but practical detail. A pure bungee gives you adaptability but not precision. The cleat lets you fine-tune the tension, so you can tighten slightly when diving barefoot, loosen a fraction when wearing a thin sock, or dial in exactly how firmly the fin sits on your foot. That micro-adjustment is something many bungee-only fins skip.

The heel piece is soft anatomical rubber, and the grab handle that helps you pull the fin on wraps close to the ankle rather than sticking outward. That keeps it from catching on things and eliminates the edge that can dig into your ankle during a long surface swim.

The fin works with bare feet or light socks. It is not designed around a thick neoprene bootie, so if you regularly dive in cold water and wear a 5mm or 7mm boot, check the sizing carefully or consider whether a fin with a larger, more rigid heel pocket would suit you better.

The Maui is sized for adults and is available in multiple sizes. Dive centre stock uses colour-coded heel pieces by size, which makes sorting a rental rack much faster. If you are buying your own pair, that detail is less relevant, but it signals that the fin is a common choice in rental and instruction settings, which is a reasonable indicator of durability and ease of use.

Cressi designed the fin with weight and packed dimensions in mind. It is not a long, stiff performance blade. If you are flying to a destination and fitting fins into a bag alongside a wetsuit and BCD, the Maui is easier to manage than a full-length fin.
