Cressi Aquawing BCD: Back-Inflation Buoyancy Compensator with a One-Size-Fits-All Design

The Cressi Aquawing is a back-inflation BCD, meaning the air bladder sits behind you rather than wrapping around your sides. That position keeps your front clear and lets you lie flat and horizontal in the water, which is exactly the trim most recreational divers are working toward.

It comes in one size only, built around Cressi's patented MAS (Modular Adjustment System). If you have ever struggled to find a BCD that fits your frame, or you are buying online without a chance to try it on first, that single-size approach is worth understanding before you go further.

How the One-Size Fit Actually Works

The MAS system uses a single 2-inch (50 mm) webbing belt that runs over the shoulders and around the waist. You adjust it in one continuous movement rather than fiddling with separate shoulder and waist buckles independently. Cressi designed this to accommodate a wide range of body shapes, both male and female.

A 2-inch crotch strap with a squeeze-style side-release buckle is included. This is the strap that runs between your legs and keeps the BCD from riding up your back when the bladder inflates. It is a detail that matters more than it sounds: without it, a back-inflation BCD can push up and press against the back of your head at the surface.

The waist strap uses a metal latch-style buckle, which is more durable than plastic over time and gives a positive, secure closure.

Lift Capacity and Who It Suits

The Aquawing provides 29.3 lbs (13.3 kg) of lift, sized for single-cylinder recreational diving. That is enough for a standard aluminum 80 or steel 72 with a wetsuit in warm to temperate water.

If you are planning drysuit diving or carrying twin cylinders, this BCD is not the right tool. It is designed around one tank, and the lift capacity reflects that.

The Back Plate

Behind the bladder sits an anodized light-alloy back plate. This is not a full metal plate system like a technical diver would use, but it gives the Aquawing more structure and stability than a soft-back BCD. It keeps the tank positioned correctly and reduces the flex you sometimes feel with all-fabric designs.

A thermoplastic rubber (TPR) cylinder rest is integrated into the back. This cradles the tank and holds it in the right position for good trim without you having to fiddle with placement every time you kit up.

Securing the Tank

The Aquawing uses two cam-band straps to hold the cylinder. Two bands give noticeably better stability than a single band, especially on longer dives where a single-band setup can allow the tank to shift slightly as you move.

Inflation and Dump Controls

The inflator is Cressi's Next Generation Anatomical Power Inflator, connected via a 3/8-inch threaded quick-disconnect hose. It includes a cable-activated pull dump valve on the inflator itself.

There is also a lower left pull dump valve with an overpressure relief function. This one sits low on the left side of the bladder and lets you vent air when you are inverted or when the main inflator dump is not the most convenient option. Having two dump points gives you more control over your ascent rate in different body positions.

Comfort and Drainage

The shoulder straps and back cover are made from an air-net material, which is a open-weave fabric that drains quickly and breathes on the surface. It reduces the clammy, waterlogged feeling you get from solid neoprene padding after a dive.

Materials

1500D Cordura is a heavy-duty nylon fabric. The "D" stands for denier, a measure of thread weight. At 1500D, this is on the tougher end of what you see in recreational BCDs and holds up well against tank valves, boat gunwales, and rocky entries.

Pockets and Accessory Attachment

There is a rear zippered trim weight pocket that holds up to 5 lbs (2.7 kg). This pocket is non-releasable, meaning it is for trim weight only, not emergency weight drop. If you need releasable integrated weights for ditching at the surface, this BCD does not provide that. Factor that into your weighting plan before you buy.

A dedicated pocket on the back is sized to carry a surface marker buoy (SMB). Having a fixed home for your SMB means it is always in the same place and not clipped to a D-ring where it can snag.

The four stainless steel D-rings give you attachment points for a dive light, compass, or other accessories without relying on clips that corrode.

This BCD suits a recreational diver who wants a proper back-inflation setup without moving into a full plate-and-wing system. The alloy back plate gives it more rigidity than a soft BCD, the donut bladder gives you clean horizontal trim, and the MAS adjustment makes fitting straightforward across different body types.

It is a good fit if you dive warm to temperate water on a single cylinder and want a BCD that will last. The Cordura shell, metal buckles, and stainless D-rings are all built for repeated use rather than occasional trips.

It is not the right choice if you need releasable integrated weight pockets, if you are planning technical or twin-cylinder diving, or if you have a body shape at the extreme ends of the size range and are uncertain whether a single-size design will work for you. In that case, trying one on before committing is worth the effort.
