Cressi A1 Mask: Single-Lens Dive Mask Built for a Close, Clear View

The Cressi A1 is a low-volume, single-lens dive mask designed for both scuba diving and freediving.

If you are a recreational diver who wants a well-fitted, no-fuss mask that clears easily, sits comfortably across a wide range of face shapes, and gives you a clean sightline down to your gauges, the A1 is worth a serious look.

The Lens: Shape, Glass, and the UV420 Option

The A1 uses a single front window of tempered glass. Tempered glass is the standard for dive masks because it is far more resistant to pressure and impact than ordinary glass, and if it does break, it shatters into small blunt fragments rather than sharp shards.

The lens is cut in an inverted teardrop shape and angled slightly downward. That tilt is not just aesthetic. It widens what you can see below your line of sight without moving your head, which makes glancing at a wrist computer or console noticeably easier underwater.

The A1 comes in two lens versions:

• Standard clear lens for everyday scuba and freediving use.
• UV420 yellow-tinted lens that blocks high-energy visible (HEV) light. This tint increases contrast and color saturation underwater, and it protects lutein, a pigment in the retina that can degrade with repeated exposure to harmful light wavelengths. If you dive in bright, shallow tropical water or spend time at the surface in strong sunlight, the UV420 version is worth considering.

Fit and Seal

The skirt and strap are soft silicone rubber. Silicone conforms more readily to facial contours than older PVC materials, and it stays flexible in cold water where PVC can stiffen.

The inner skirt has a double feathered edge at the top. This means the silicone tapers to a very thin, pliable rim where it meets your face, which helps the seal conform tightly even across brow shapes that vary a lot between divers.

The skirt design also incorporates a drain channel at the bottom. When you clear the mask by exhaling through your nose, water collects and exits more efficiently rather than pooling and sloshing back in. This is a small detail that makes a real difference if you find mask clearing awkward.

The volume of the mask is rated low. A low-volume mask sits closer to your face, which means less air is needed to clear it and it is easier to equalize the airspace as you descend. Freedivers in particular prefer low-volume masks for this reason, though recreational scuba divers benefit from the easier clearing as well.

Strap and Buckles

The buckles attach to the frame through a soft elastic flap rather than a rigid bracket. This reduces the stiffness at the connection point, which lowers the chance of the buckle cracking or snapping under stress, and it also cuts down on drag against the frame when you are moving through the water.

Strap length adjusts with one hand, and the mechanism is designed to work even with gloves on. If you dive in cooler water with thick gloves, this matters more than it might seem. Fumbling with a stiff buckle on a rocking boat is a familiar frustration, and the A1 is built to avoid it.

Nose Pocket and Equalization

The nose pocket is described as large and soft, positioned so it is easy to reach with your fingers. Equalization, the process of gently pinching your nose and blowing to balance pressure in your ears as you descend, requires you to reach the pocket comfortably without straining. A cramped or stiff nose pocket makes this harder than it needs to be, especially on longer dives with frequent depth changes.

The rigid case is a practical inclusion. Mask lenses scratch easily when loose in a bag, and a cracked skirt from being crushed by other gear is a common pre-dive disappointment.

Who This Mask Is Not Ideal For

The A1 is a single-lens mask, which means it cannot be fitted with prescription lenses in the same straightforward way that twin-lens masks can. If you need corrective lenses to see clearly underwater, a dual-lens design that accepts bonded prescription inserts will serve you better.

It is also worth noting that fit is always personal. The A1 is designed to suit a wide range of face shapes, but no single mask fits everyone. If possible, try the skirt against your face before committing.
