What the Progressive Full-Stretch Construction Actually Means

Bare built the Velocity around what they call Progressive Full-Stretch (PFS) construction. This is not a single fabric throughout. It combines three different full-stretch neoprene materials, each placed where the suit needs it most.

The foundation is Bare's ergonomic shaping system, which uses articulated arms and legs. This means the suit is cut in three dimensions to follow the natural bent position of a diver in the water, not a person standing upright. That matters because a suit patterned for a standing body pulls and binds when you are horizontal and finning.

On top of that foundation, Bare adds higher-stretch panels in the areas where your body moves the most, particularly the shoulders and joints. The result is a suit that moves with you rather than fighting you through a dive.

Keeping Water Out

Warmth in a wetsuit depends on two things: the thickness of the neoprene and how well the suit keeps cold water from flushing in and replacing the thin layer of warmed water against your skin.

The Velocity addresses flushing in several specific ways.

• Glide-Skin collar with 360-degree neck seal: A contoured, 5mm collar that seals all the way around your neck, including across the zipper line. This is often where water sneaks in on cheaper suits.
• Skin-to-skin internal sealing flap behind the zipper: The back zipper has a flap of neoprene behind it that presses against your back, blocking the zip line as a water entry point.
• Flip seals at the forearms and ankles: Bare's own design that folds back to seal the cuff openings. These are a practical detail that reduces the cold flush you can feel when reaching overhead or kicking hard.

Together, these features make the Velocity genuinely better at retaining warmth than a basic suit of the same thickness.

Durability Where It Gets Worn

Knee areas take the most punishment in a wetsuit, from kneeling on boats, entering and exiting, and contact with reef or rock. The Velocity uses PROTEKT knee panels, a reinforced material designed for abrasion resistance, plus embossed flex panels across the back of the knees to keep the suit comfortable when you are kicking or crouching.

The seam construction is double-glued with Secure-Lock stitching. Double-gluing bonds the neoprene edges together before stitching, which both strengthens the seam and reduces water seeping through stitch holes. This is a meaningful construction step that extends the working life of the suit.

Getting In and Out

A 5mm full suit can be a wrestling match if the entry system is poorly designed. The Velocity uses a heavy-duty back zipper with a pull-tab leash, so you can reach it yourself without a helper. Ankle zippers on both legs let you get your feet in and out cleanly without forcing your heel through a tight cuff, which also reduces wear on the neoprene at that point.

The Velocity is positioned as a mid-level suit, and that is an honest description. It is built better than entry-level neoprene, with real flexibility engineering and proper sealing, but it is not a drysuit alternative or a technical cold-water garment.

It suits a recreational diver who dives regularly in cool to cold water and wants a suit that lasts, moves well, and does not require constant adjustment to stay comfortable over a full day of diving.

If you dive in very cold water and find yourself cold in a 5mm suit in general, this suit will not change that fundamental equation. The answer there is either a drysuit or layering under a thicker suit. But if a 5mm suit is the right thermal choice for your diving, the Velocity is one of the more thoughtfully built options in that category.
