Aim before you press the shutter

Four brightness levels let you choose the aiming light you need, with up to 1,000 lumens available on a full battery. With the optional OS-1 snoot attached, the LEDs show the beam placement while you compose; the snoot is sold separately.

Choose output with a dedicated dial

The red dial selects seven manual flash-output levels, keeping the adjustment on the strobe. A single-flash manual trigger can skip the startup learning step, and the MF-3 remembers that choice until you change it.

Backscatter Mini Flash 3: a compact strobe for close-up photography

The Backscatter Mini Flash 3 combines an underwater photographic flash with a built-in focus light. Its main role is macro lighting: illuminating a small subject, positioning light close to it and, with the optional Optical Snoot OS-1, narrowing the beam to isolate details. The focus LEDs reach 1,000 lumens, while the strobe has a stated full-power recycle time of one second and a depth rating of 100 metres.

This is the standalone MF-3 strobe. The snoot, approved battery and charger are separate purchases, so the box price is not the cost of a complete camera-lighting setup.

Who it suits

The MF-3 suits underwater photographers who want a compact light for small subjects and controlled backgrounds. It offers manual flash output, plus automatic TTL exposure with supported Olympus/OM System and Sony camera setups. TTL compatibility depends on the camera and trigger, not simply on whether a fiber-optic cable fits.

It is particularly relevant if you plan to use a snoot. The optional OS-1 and the MF-3 were designed to work together, with the focus light showing where the snoot beam will fall. The snoot is an accessory, not part of this standalone package.

A focus light that helps you place the flash

The built-in LEDs provide four brightness levels when the battery is full. You can cycle through them with the silver button, using the light to frame a subject and aim an attached snoot. Available brightness levels decrease as the battery runs down.

The 1,000-lumen figure describes the continuous focus light, not the photographic flash output. That distinction matters when comparing specifications: this is a strobe with an aiming light, and the two functions have different controls and purposes.

Check your camera before choosing TTL

Smart Control provides automatic TTL exposure for compatible Olympus/OM System cameras. Olympus/OM mirrorless setups need an internal flash or a compatible RC trigger, with the camera configured for the manufacturer's RC settings. A separate macro Smart Control setting is intended for close subjects.

Sony mirrorless TTL requires the Backscatter Sony TTL Flash Trigger. Other third-party TTL triggers do not communicate using the MF-3's TTL protocol, and Sony RX-series compact cameras do not support its Smart Control TTL. Check the exact camera, housing and trigger combination before buying; a general claim of Sony compatibility is not enough.

Manual control and faster-shutter options

In manual mode, the red dial selects seven flash-output levels. The default learning mode reads the camera's flash pattern on the first shot after startup, allowing for pre-flash cancellation. If your manual trigger emits a single flash, you can disable that learning step; the strobe remembers the choice.

High-speed sync is available with compatible camera and trigger arrangements. It allows flash use above the camera's usual sync speed, but reduces available flash output, with a further reduction as shutter speed increases. Backscatter therefore specifies HSS for close-up work. It is a useful exposure option, rather than a way to retain full flash power at every shutter speed.

Mounting and off-camera lighting

Both a YS-style mount and a one-inch ball mount are included. The ball mount suits standard one-inch arm systems, while the YS mount can be used with Backscatter Flex Arms. The strobe synchronizes through a Sea & Sea-style fiber-optic cable connected to the housing.

The included light pipe supports remote operation, but it does not make one strobe a complete remote-lighting system. That requires at least two compatible Backscatter strobes, with a camera-connected main flash triggering the remote unit. Remote power changes also need line of sight between the main flash and the light pipe.

What the standalone box includes

Alongside the strobe and both mounts, the manual lists a wide-angle diffuser, light pipe, two spare O-rings, O-ring grease and a 3/16-inch hex wrench. The diffuser is listed with a two-stop light loss, a relevant trade-off when spreading the flash beam.

Power comes from one approved, circuit-protected 21700 lithium-ion battery. The battery and charger are sold separately. Follow Backscatter's current approved battery list rather than selecting any cell marked 21700, and follow the manual's seal-care instructions when opening the battery compartment.

Choose the MF-3 around the photographs and camera system you intend to use: compact macro lighting, optional snoot control and supported manual or TTL triggering. Budget for the required battery and any trigger, fiber-optic cable, snoot or arm components your existing rig does not already provide.

What divers ask about the Backscatter Mini Flash 3 Underwater Strobe MF-3 before buying

Will the Mini Flash 3 work with my Sony camera?

Automatic TTL requires a compatible Sony mirrorless setup and the Backscatter Sony TTL Flash Trigger. Other third-party TTL triggers do not support the MF-3’s TTL protocol, and Sony RX-series compact cameras do not support its Smart Control TTL. Check the exact camera, housing and trigger combination before buying.

Does it support Olympus and OM System TTL?

Yes, Smart Control provides TTL with compatible Olympus/OM System camera setups. Mirrorless cameras need an internal flash or compatible RC trigger and the correct RC menu settings. Follow the manual for your specific camera rather than treating a fiber-optic connection as proof of TTL compatibility.

Is the Optical Snoot OS-1 included?

No, the OS-1 snoot is an optional accessory. The MF-3 works with it to narrow the light onto a small subject, but this standalone strobe package does not include the snoot.

What battery does it use, and is it included?

It uses one approved, circuit-protected 21700 lithium-ion battery. The battery and charger are sold separately. Use Backscatter’s current approved list, as the cell size alone does not establish suitability.

What comes with the standalone strobe?

The manual lists YS-style and one-inch ball mounts, a wide-angle diffuser, a light pipe, two spare O-rings, O-ring grease and a 3/16-inch hex wrench. The battery and charger are separate, and a camera rig may also need a suitable trigger, fiber-optic cable and arm components.

Does high-speed sync reduce the flash power?

Yes, HSS produces less flash output than normal shooting, and output decreases further as shutter speed rises. Backscatter specifies it for close-up work. A compatible camera and flash trigger are required.
