What Makes It Frameless, and Why That Matters

Most masks have a rigid plastic frame that holds the lens and connects it to the skirt (the soft silicone part that seals against your face). A frameless mask bonds the lens directly to the skirt material, cutting out the frame entirely.

The practical result is the widest possible field of view in a single-lens design. Without a frame eating into your sightlines, you see more of the water around you.

The frameless construction also keeps the mask compact and low-profile, which matters in two ways. First, a low-volume mask sits closer to your face, which brings the lens nearer to your eyes and widens your angle of view further. Second, less internal air space means less water to displace when you clear the mask, so clearing takes a quick exhale rather than a sustained effort.

The Skirt: Two Silicones, One Seal

Atomic Aquatics uses two different grades of silicone co-molded together in the Venom's skirt. The face-contact edge is made from what Atomic calls Gummi Bear silicone, rated at 10 Shore hardness. Shore hardness measures how stiff a material is; 10 Shore is exceptionally soft, close to the feel of a very soft gel.

That ultra-soft edge conforms to the contours of your face rather than pressing against them, which is why the Venom tends to seal well across a wider range of face shapes than stiffer masks do.

The rest of the skirt uses a firmer silicone. It is still soft enough to be comfortable, but it holds its shape under pressure and in current. It will not fold or collapse when conditions get lively, which keeps the seal consistent throughout the dive.

Atomic also uses a double feathered edge along the sealing surface. This means the silicone tapers to a thin, flexible lip at the contact point rather than meeting your face with a blunt edge. Combined with the soft material, this geometry is designed to accommodate faces that have had trouble sealing with standard masks.

The UltraClear Lens: Schott Superwite Glass

This is where the Venom separates itself from Atomic's own Frameless and SubFrame models.

Standard dive mask glass has a faint green tint. You can see it yourself by holding any ordinary mask up to a white sheet of paper. That tint comes from iron impurities in the glass, and it does two things you do not want: it shifts colors away from true, and it blocks a portion of the light reaching your eye.

The Venom uses Schott Superwite glass imported from Germany, which Atomic calls UltraClear. Schott is a well-regarded optical glass manufacturer. Their Superwite formulation removes the iron content that causes the green cast, allowing up to 96% of available light to reach your eyes. The Atomic Frameless and SubFrame use ultra-clear glass, which is already a step above standard mask glass; the Venom's Schott Superwite lens is a step above that.

In practice, this matters most in two situations: dives where color accuracy is important to you (photography, reef observation), and low-light dives such as night dives, deep dives, or diving in murky water. More light transmission means better visual acuity when the light is already limited.

The lens is also tempered, meaning it has been heat-treated to be significantly stronger than ordinary glass and to break into small, blunt fragments rather than sharp shards if it does break.

Fit and Adjustment

The strap buckles are mounted directly to the silicone skirt rather than to a rigid frame. This soft-mounting lets you shift the strap angle to match your head shape, which is a small detail that makes a real difference in getting an even seal.

The buckles use a squeeze-to-adjust design that you can operate with one hand, even with gloves on. They also fold flat against the mask for packing, so the Venom sits neatly in a bag without the buckles snagging on other gear.

The nose pocket is shaped for one-handed ear equalization (pinching your nose to equalize pressure as you descend). The geometry also pulls the lens closer to your face, contributing further to the wide field of view.

Shape: A Hybrid Design

The Venom's lens is a single window, like Atomic's Frameless model. But the bridge sits higher and the overall shape is a teardrop, more like the dual-window SubFrame. This gives you the unobstructed panoramic view of a single lens combined with a fit profile that suits divers who find very flat single-lens masks do not bridge their nose comfortably.

Who This Mask Is Not For
