The Atomic Aquatics BC2 is a back-inflation BCD aimed squarely at experienced recreational and advanced divers who want a wing-style setup without sacrificing the convenience of an integrated weight system.

If you have been diving long enough to prefer back inflation over a jacket-style BCD, and you want something built to genuinely last rather than just look the part, the BC2 is worth a serious look.

Why Back Inflation, and Why It Matters Here

Back-inflate BCDs push all the lift behind you, which means the air does not crowd your chest or pull you face-down at the surface the way some jacket styles can. In the water, you naturally settle into a horizontal trim, which is exactly the position that makes finning efficient and reduces drag.

The BC2 takes that basic advantage and builds on it with what Atomic Aquatics calls a retractable bladder. When deflated, the bladder tucks away rather than hanging loose, keeping the BCD streamlined. When inflated, it expands fully. That is a meaningful detail for divers who care about clean hydrodynamics rather than just adequate buoyancy.

Construction: What "Durable" Actually Means on This BCD

Atomic Aquatics made durability the starting point for the BC2, not an afterthought.

The outer shell is 420-denier double-laminated polyurethane textile, coated on both sides. The exterior layer is thicker specifically to resist tearing and cutting. The interior coating seals the fabric so water does not soak in, which means the BCD dries out very quickly after a dive. If you dive regularly in salt water or rough conditions, that matters both for comfort and for the long-term health of the materials.

Atomic Aquatics states this material handles cycle and burst pressures nearly double those of standard BCD fabrics. The inner bladder is also described as high-strength and, importantly, replaceable, so a bladder issue does not mean replacing the entire BCD.

Hardware follows the same logic. D-rings are 316 stainless steel with a titanium PVD coating. Tank pad hardware is CNC-machined stainless steel. Zippers on the side pockets are sand-resistant. These are not decorative choices; they are the details that determine whether a BCD holds up after two years of regular saltwater diving or starts corroding and stiffening.

The Tank Band: Ratcheting Cam-Lok System

The BC2 uses a ratcheting Cam-Lok tank band rather than a traditional nylon webbing buckle. You push the molded belt teeth through the ratchet and lock it with an over-center buckle. No weaving webbing, no fiddling.

It accommodates a range of tank sizes and locks down securely. An insert-molded polyester-reinforced belt in the band adds a safety margin. If you have ever struggled with a conventional tank band on a cold morning or with wet hands, this system is a genuine improvement.

Integrated Weight System

The BC2 is weight-integrated, with two types of pockets working together.

• Releasable EZ-LOK pouches slide into pockets under the arms and click into place. Each holds up to 10 lbs. (4.5 kg) in sizes small through large, and up to 14 lbs. (6.35 kg) in XL. A one-handed pull on the handle releases them, which is the critical function in an emergency ascent.
• Non-releasable trim pockets sit at the rear, low-profile and hydrodynamic. These hold up to 10 lbs. (4.5 kg) in sizes medium through XL, and 6 lbs. (2.7 kg) in small. Use these for fine-tuning your trim, not for your primary ballast.

The pouches accept both hard and soft weights. The locking mechanism uses the same principle as Atomic Aquatics' EZ-LOK fin straps, so if you are already familiar with those, the feel will be intuitive.

Lift Capacity by Size

The jump in lift between medium and large is significant. If you dive in a drysuit or carry heavy steel tanks, size up and confirm the lift figure works for your configuration before you commit.

Fit and Adjustability

The BC2 adjusts across three planes: torso length, sternum, and waist. All straps use squeeze-style side-release buckles, which are faster to operate than push-button designs, especially with gloves on. There is also an adjustable cummerbund for a closer, more secure fit around the midsection.

The back pad is diamond-pattern quilted, and there is a separate adjustable lumbar pad. Silicone webbing replaces traditional elastic on the bands, which resists deterioration from repeated salt water exposure and dries faster.

Inflation System: Sold Separately

This is the detail that catches some buyers off guard. The BC2 does not include an inflator mechanism. Atomic Aquatics designed the BCD around their own Ai Power Inflator series, available in titanium and stainless steel versions, and also around their SS1 Safe Second Inflator. You will need to purchase one of these separately.

The Ai Power Inflators use large over-molded buttons and connect via a 3/8" threaded low-pressure hose with a quick-disconnect coupling. The titanium model aligns with a 3-year or 300-dive service interval; the stainless steel model with a 2-year or 300-dive interval. If you are already diving Atomic Aquatics regulators, this integration is a genuine convenience. If you are not, factor in the additional cost and confirm compatibility before ordering.

Weight and Travel

The BC2 weighs 9.5 lbs. (4.3 kg) in small and 10.5 lbs. (4.76 kg) in XL. For a back-inflate BCD with this level of construction, that is a reasonable figure. It is not a minimalist travel wing, but it is not a burden either for dive travel where you are checking bags.

Who This BCD Is Not For

If you are newly certified and still working out your buoyancy, a jacket-style BCD will feel more intuitive at the surface. Back-inflate designs require a bit more practice to stay upright when fully inflated on the surface, and the BC2 is not designed to hand-hold you through that learning curve.

If you want a complete, ready-to-dive package out of the box, the missing inflator will be a frustration. And if you prefer to use a non-Atomic inflator, confirm compatibility before assuming it will work.
