Aqualung Rogue BCD: Back-Inflate Wing BCD Built for Customization and Streamlined Diving

The Aqualung Rogue is a back-inflate wing-style BCD aimed squarely at the experienced recreational diver who has outgrown a generic off-the-shelf setup and wants gear that fits their body and their style of diving precisely.

If you have been diving long enough to know what bothers you about your current BCD, this is worth a serious look. If you are still working through your first open-water dives, a simpler jacket-style BCD will serve you better while you build your fundamentals.

Back-Inflate Design: What That Means Underwater

A back-inflate wing keeps all the buoyancy behind you rather than wrapping around your sides and chest. In practice, this tips you into a horizontal, face-down trim in the water, which is the position most experienced divers actively work toward.

You stay streamlined, you create less drag, and your hands stay free. The trade-off is that a back-inflate BCD can feel less stable at the surface, particularly when you are fully inflated and waiting for a boat pickup. That is a known characteristic of the design, not a flaw specific to the Rogue.

Aqualung's 3-position bladder retraction system pulls the sides of the inflated bladder inward when you deflate, keeping the unit tight against your back and reducing drag as you swim. It is a practical detail that matters on longer dives.

The Modular Fit System

The standout feature on the Rogue is Aqualung's Mod-Lock connector system, which lets you disconnect and reattach the shoulder straps and waist strap quickly, without tools.

The system creates up to 27 different size configurations, so you can dial in the fit for your torso length and body shape rather than settling for the closest standard size. This also makes the BCD genuinely shareable between divers of different builds, which matters if you travel with a partner or dive with a club.

Beyond fit, the modular design means you can swap in optional accessories or reconfigure attachment points as your diving evolves. The Rogue is built to grow with you rather than become obsolete when your needs change.

Lift Capacity and Weight Integration

The Rogue provides 35 lbs (15.9 kg) of lift capacity, which comfortably handles a single-tank recreational setup in either a wetsuit or a drysuit, with room to spare for a heavier cylinder.

Weight integration uses Aqualung's SureLock II system. You slide the weight pouch in and an audible click confirms it is locked. To release, you pull the handle firmly. The pockets take up to 20 lbs (9 kg) total, which covers most recreational weighting needs.

If you need trim weight for horizontal balance, optional trim weight pockets (sold separately, SKU: UDRTP) can be added to the back. Each pocket holds either 3 lbs or 5 lbs (1.36 kg or 2.25 kg). These are non-releasable and sit at the rear to help you fine-tune your angle in the water.

Dump Valves and Buoyancy Control

The Rogue gives you multiple ways to vent air depending on your position in the water:

• Power Line inflator at the left shoulder: pull down on the lower unit to activate a cable-driven rapid exhaust at the top. This is your primary dump when swimming horizontally.
• Right shoulder pull dump: useful when you are ascending and want to vent without reaching across your body.
• Right rear lower dump valve: lets you vent when you are feet-down or in an upright position.
• Two over-pressure relief valves: automatic protection against over-inflation.

Having dumps in different positions means you can control your ascent rate smoothly regardless of your body angle, which is something you will appreciate as your buoyancy technique matures.

The Power Line inflator connects to your regulator's first stage via a 3/8-inch threaded low-pressure quick-disconnect hose. It is an environmentally sealed unit, which reduces the maintenance burden compared to open inflators that are more exposed to salt and debris.

Tank Band and Hardware

The GripLock tank band uses predetermined detent settings rather than the traditional weave-through buckle system. You click it into position and it holds securely. When you switch between cylinders of the same diameter, no re-adjustment is needed. A built-in finger saver prevents the pinching that older-style cam-bands are known for.

Attachment hardware includes four pre-bent stainless-steel D-rings and a webbed daisy chain along the harness, giving you multiple anchor points for an SPG, a torch, a knife, or a surface marker buoy.

There is also a dedicated octo (alternate air source) holder and a knife attachment point, both standard on the Rogue rather than optional add-ons.

Harness and Pockets

The harness runs adjustable straps at the torso, shoulders, sternum, and waist. All four use squeeze-style side-release buckles, which are faster to operate with cold or gloved hands than traditional pull-tab buckles.

Two folding pockets give you storage for a slate, a spool, or small tools. If you need more waist room or additional pocket storage, an optional waistband extender (SKU: UDRBE15) can be added.

Weight

The Rogue comes in at under 5 lbs (2.2 kg), which is genuinely light for a fully featured back-inflate BCD. That matters if you are checking dive gear as luggage or carrying your kit any distance on foot.

Who the Rogue Is Not For

If you are a newer diver still working on buoyancy control, the back-inflate design will make surface floats less comfortable and may feel less intuitive early on. A jacket-style BCD will give you more surface stability while you build your skills.

If you dive primarily in very cold water with a thick drysuit, you may want to confirm the 35 lbs lift capacity is sufficient for your specific cylinder and exposure suit combination before committing.

The Rogue is also a single-tank BCD. If you are moving toward technical diving with stage bottles or twin sets, you would be looking at a different category of equipment entirely.
