Ocean Conservancy’s yearly International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) holds its Washington, DC event on the Anacostia River this year, on Saturday, September 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. ET. It’s part of a global cleanup that runs in more than 100 countries.

You don’t have to live near DC to take part. Ocean Conservancy runs the free Clean Swell app, which lets you log every piece of trash you collect from any beach or waterway, anywhere in the world. That data feeds a global marine debris database that scientists and policymakers use to track ocean plastic pollution.

According to Ocean Conservancy, this year the app adds a Wildlife Impact Calculator that estimates how many marine animals your cleanup may have helped protect.

If you’re in the DC area, meet near the Roller Skating Rink and Aquatic Resources Education Center at 1500 Anacostia Drive SE and register for the cleanup. Anywhere else, use the Clean Swell app to log your own cleanup.
