The Diving: Wrecks, Wildlife & Volcanic Reefs

From within the resort, all dive operations are handled by Statia Divers, the on-site PADI 5-Star Dive Center, which runs daily guided boat dives to the island’s premier underwater sites. With valet diving, it’s as easy as dropping your gear in front of your accommodation for placement on the boat—all you need to do is relax onboard. And, after each dive you’ll find snacks and soft drinks waiting for your surface interval.

The diving here is an intriguing blend of history and nature, shaped by the island’s volcanic origins and colonial past. Since conditions are generally calm, with moderate currents and excellent visibility, diving is possible year-round.

There are over 30 dive sites, featuring lava boulders, coral-encrusted slopes, Caribbean sand flats brimming with garden eels, and wrecks peppered with maritime artifacts.

Explore reefs teeming with sea turtles, stingrays, and schooling reef fish—and then discover an old Dutch cannon on the seabed. It’s this diversity that makes diving around Statia truly one-of-a-kind.

Top sites include Stenapa Reef, the Hangover, Anchor Point, and the Charles L. Brown (Charlie Brown) wreck, the crown jewel of Statia. This massive cable-laying ship sits on its side in about 100 feet (30 m) of water, with wide-open swim-throughs, great natural light, and plenty of marine life. It is undoubtedly the most photogenic wreck in the Caribbean.

Since much of Statia’s coastline is rocky, nearly all dives are done from the resort’s custom dive boats. There’s no house reef, but Golden Rock has its own unique, ocean-fed lagoon, the largest in the Caribbean. The lagoon is 30 feet (9 m) deep, perfect for training dives and completing certifications.

The Resort: One with Nature

Golden Rock Dive & Nature Resort is a lush green sanctuary that blends in with St. Eustatius’ wild volcanic landscape. Built on a 40-acre hillside estate, the resort’s garden has over 140,000 flowers and trees, amongst which hummingbirds, little lizards, and butterflies find sanctuary. The resort runs almost entirely on solar power, produces its own fresh drinking water, and reuses wastewater to keep its lush grounds thriving. With a 20,000-square-foot greenhouse, the resort grows its own produce, and guests can even pick their own mint for mojitos. Guests are welcome to visit the greenhouse from Monday to Friday, 10 am to noon, when the staff can take them on a tour and offer a complimentary refreshment.

The Dining: Fresh and Flavorful

Breakfast is included in your stay, and meal plans are available for those who want to keep it simple. Dietary needs are easily accommodated, and staff is happy to work around dive schedules so you never have to choose between your next bite and your next dive.

Golden Rock’s main restaurant is Breeze, which has a central, marble bar set under a dramatic wooden canopy with large, comfortable chairs encouraging you to stay a while. It is an open-plan layout, blurring the boundaries with the landscape outside.

Guests can expect globally inspired dishes using herbs and vegetables grown right on site at the greenhouse, grill plates, freshly prepared sushi, and classic cocktails. All meals come with a side of sweeping views over the ocean and the island’s green hills.

Open only in the high season, Bobbie’s Beach Club is a colorful restaurant down by the coastline. Here you’ll find a more casual menu of nachos and chicken wings by day and pizza and barbeque specialities by night. Overlooking the lagoon, it’s a great spot to watch your little ones doing a try dive while sipping on a mojito.

For poolside refreshments, guests lounging at the larger Hummingbird Pool can order directly from Breeze, located just next door. Over at the smaller Hibiscus Pool, you’ll find the resort’s dedicated pool bar—a relaxed daytime hangout serving light snacks, tropical cocktails, and cold, refreshing beers.

Out of the Water: Craters & Culture

Statia might be small, but there’s plenty to do when you’re not in the water. Right on Golden Rock’s doorstep you’ll find the island’s dormant volcano, the Quill. Hike the well-marked trail through the dry evergreen forest, which transforms into a lush rainforest within the crater itself. Guests of the resort are awarded with a special certification that they climbed a dormant volcano.
