Shearwater Peregrine: A Full-Featured Wrist Computer Built for Recreational Divers Who Want More Screen and Less Complexity

The Shearwater Peregrine is a wrist-worn dive computer aimed squarely at recreational divers who want a genuinely readable display, a clean two-button interface, and a decompression algorithm they can actually trust, without having to wade through a feature set built for technical diving.

If you are newly certified or a few years into recreational diving and you have been looking at computers that feel either too basic or too complicated, the Peregrine is worth a serious look.

The Display Is the First Thing You Will Notice

Most dive computers in this category use a small monochrome screen. The Peregrine does not.

It runs a 2.2-inch full-color LCD at 320 x 240 resolution, with a color range and saturation level that Shearwater describes as vivid and enhanced. In practice, that means your depth, no-decompression limit (NDL), and gas information are separated visually by color, not just by position on the screen.

At depth, especially in low-visibility or blue-water conditions, that difference is real. You spend less time squinting and more time diving.

The display is also user-customizable. You can arrange the data fields on your home screen to show the information you actually want to see first, rather than whatever a factory default decided was most important.

Diving Modes and Gas Support

The Peregrine runs four modes:

• Air tracks your no-decompression limits on a standard air mix for everyday diving.
• Nitrox supports a single enriched-air gas mix up to 40% oxygen, extending your NDL on shallower dives by accounting for the reduced nitrogen load.
• 3-Gas Nitrox lets you program and switch between up to three gas mixes underwater, with full decompression support and oxygen mixes up to 100%. This is the mode that gives the Peregrine room to grow with you.
• Gauge turns the computer into a depth gauge and resettable stopwatch, useful when you want to run your own profile or dive with a separate bottom timer.

For most recreational divers, Air and single-gas Nitrox will cover every dive. The 3-gas mode is there if you pursue advanced nitrox training or start doing deeper recreational dives that benefit from a travel mix and a deco gas.

The Algorithm: Bühlmann ZHL-16C with Gradient Factors

The Peregrine uses the Bühlmann ZHL-16C algorithm with gradient factors. This is the same algorithm used in Shearwater's professional and technical computers, not a stripped-down version.

Gradient factors (often written GF) let you adjust how conservatively the algorithm calculates your ascent. The default settings are appropriate for recreational diving, and you can leave them exactly where they are. As your experience grows and your training expands, you will already have a computer that lets you tune those settings rather than forcing you to buy a new one.

One thing Shearwater is particularly clear about: the Peregrine will never lock you out for deviating from a planned dive profile. Some computers penalize you with a lockout period if you go deeper or longer than planned. The Peregrine does not. It continues to calculate and display your decompression obligation in real time, so you always have the information you need to make a safe ascent.

Built-In Dive Planner

The Peregrine includes both a quick NDL planner and a full decompression planner directly on the computer.

The NDL planner lets you check how long you can stay at a given depth before your surface interval. The deco planner goes further, showing required decompression stops if you are planning a dive that goes beyond no-decompression limits.

You do not need a separate app or dive table for basic planning. It is all on your wrist before you hit the water.

Controls and Navigation

The Peregrine uses a two-button interface with what Shearwater calls a state-aware menu structure. That means the buttons do different things depending on where you are in the menu, but the computer shows you what each button will do at any given moment. You are not memorizing button combinations.

The buttons themselves are 316 stainless steel, which holds up well against saltwater and repeated use.

Navigation is genuinely simple. This is one area where Shearwater has a clear reputation: their computers are not intimidating to operate, even for divers who are not gear-obsessed.

Battery and Charging

The Peregrine runs on a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with up to 30 hours of life per charge at medium brightness. For most recreational divers doing two or three dives a day on a trip, you will not be scrambling for power mid-week.

Charging is wireless. A USB wireless charging station is included in the box. You do not need to expose any ports or connectors to charge it, which matters for long-term water resistance.

The battery is described as factory replaceable, meaning it is not something you swap yourself at home, but it can be replaced when it eventually degrades.

Dive Log and Shearwater Cloud

The Peregrine stores approximately 200 hours of dive log data at a 10-second sampling rate. That is enough for years of recreational diving before you need to offload anything.

Logs include depth, water temperature, start and end time, surface interval, and dive profile graphs. You can review all of this directly on the computer in the dive log menu.

For more detailed review and long-term record keeping, the Peregrine connects via Bluetooth to Shearwater Cloud, which runs on Mac, Windows, Apple iOS, and Android. Firmware updates also come through Bluetooth, so keeping the computer current does not require any cables or adapters.

Size, Fit, and Strap Options

The computer measures 77 x 68 x 25mm and weighs 122 grams (4.32 oz) on its own. It is a larger-faced computer by recreational standards, which is part of what makes the screen so readable, but it is not oversized for a wrist mount.

Every Peregrine ships with two wearing options:

• A 26mm silicone black strap with a stainless steel clasp for standard wrist wear.
• A shock cord bungee for mounting over a drysuit or thick wetsuit sleeve.

Depth Rating

The Peregrine is rated to 394 feet (120 meters). That is well beyond the recreational limit of 40 meters, so the rating is not a practical concern for the vast majority of divers this computer is built for.

Who This Computer Is Not For

The Peregrine is described by Shearwater as best suited for air and nitrox divers who want a great screen and a simplified feature set.

If you are doing technical diving with closed-circuit rebreathers, multiple decompression gases beyond three, or mixed gases like trimix, you will want to look at Shearwater's more advanced computers such as the Teric or Perdix 2. The Peregrine is an open-circuit computer and is not designed for those use cases.

If you are a brand-new diver taking your first open-water course and your instructor has you using a rental computer for now, the Peregrine is a strong first computer to buy once you are certified and ready to own your own gear.
