The Case and Display

The 51mm case is substantial. At 51 x 51 x 16.4mm and 77.8g without a band, you will notice it on your wrist, especially if you are coming from a slim everyday watch.

The payoff is a 1.4-inch AMOLED display at 454 x 454 pixels, which is genuinely bright and sharp at depth. Garmin protects it with a sapphire crystal lens, which resists scratching far better than mineral glass. The bezel is DLC-coated titanium (diamond-like carbon coating, a hard surface treatment that resists wear and corrosion). The case itself uses fiber-reinforced polymer with a titanium rear cover, keeping weight reasonable while maintaining rigidity.

The buttons are leakproof inductive buttons, meaning they have no physical holes through the case. There are no seals to degrade around them. The touchscreen works at the surface but not underwater, where the physical buttons take over.

The watch is rated to 200 meters.

The algorithm is Bühlmann ZHL-16c with gradient factors. If you have used other technical-grade computers, you already know what that means: a well-established, widely trusted model with the flexibility to dial conservatism exactly where you want it.

You can set conservatism to low, medium, or high, or go fully custom using gradient factor settings (GF Low and GF High). Deep stops are supported through custom gradient factors.

The alert system is thorough. Audible and vibration alarms cover ascent rate, PO2, CNS and OTU oxygen toxicity tracking, NDL, decompression obligations, gas switching cues, tank pressure, and gas consumption rate. You can configure up to 40 custom alerts per dive mode, triggered by depth or time.

A missed deco lockout is included and can be disabled before a dive with user acknowledgement. Residual tissue loading can also be reset on the surface with acknowledgement, which matters if you are managing interrupted dive series.

Air Integration via SubWave

Air integration on the Descent Mk3i works through Garmin's SubWave sonar technology, not the radio-frequency transmitters most divers are familiar with from other brands. SubWave uses acoustic sonar to communicate underwater.

This means the Descent T2 transceiver, sold separately, is required for air integration. With it, you get real-time tank pressure, gas time remaining, and gas consumption rate on your wrist. The system supports up to 8 networked divers, so a dive leader or buddy can monitor the tank pressures and depths of the whole group from a single watch.

SubWave also enables diver-to-diver communication via preset messages, available with software version 15.70 or later. This is not free-form text; it is a set of predefined messages, but for signaling between divers underwater, that covers the practical cases.

Navigation and Situational Awareness

The compass is a 3-axis dive compass with adjustable heading, quick 90-degree left, 90-degree right, and reciprocal heading changes. It shows degrees and direction back to a set heading, which is what you actually need when navigating a wreck or reef.

Surface GPS lets you mark entry and exit points. DiveView maps include bathymetric depth contours (underwater terrain maps showing depth gradients) and more than 4,000 dive sites worldwide, useful for pre-dive planning and orientation at unfamiliar sites.

A red-shift mode is included for preserving night vision during night dives or low-light conditions.

Dive Readiness and Health Monitoring

The Descent Mk3i 51mm is built for advanced recreational and technical divers who want a single device that handles multi-gas and trimix planning, CCR diving, and air integration, without carrying a separate dive computer and smartwatch.

The SubWave air integration system is genuinely innovative, and the diver networking capability is something very few computers offer at any level.

Two things worth weighing honestly. First, the SubWave transmitter is sold separately, so air integration is not plug-and-play out of the box. Second, the 51mm case size is large. If you have a smaller wrist or find big watches uncomfortable for daily wear, the Descent Mk3i also comes in a 43mm version, which is worth comparing before you decide.

If your diving is straightforward open-water recreational diving with no plans to move toward technical diving, this level of capability comes with complexity and cost that you may not need for years. A simpler computer would serve those dives well and leave budget for other gear.
