Information to know about liveaboard diving in The Philippines
Diving in the Philippines used to get a bad wrap due to overfishing and constant boat traffic. However, things have now changed and diving is a spectacular experience enjoyed by all.
Water temperatures are usually warm enough that you can dive either with no wetsuit at all, or you dive with only a 3mm wetsuit if you’re planning on completing a longer stint underwater.
The best time to dive is during the dive season from the months of November through to May.
Rainy season is between June and October and the Philippines are known for strong monsoons during this time period.
Diving during the rainy season is not recommended as visibility drops dramatically and some dive sites are completely off limits during this time.
During this time, typhoons can also be incredibly dangerous both on land and in the water.
Air temperature averages at 25C/78F-32C/90F, with high humidity.
Getting to the Philippines is not as difficult as you may think. The Philippines has 3 main international airports MNL (Manila Nivoy Auino). It is important to be aware that if you are planning on using MNL as a transfer airports for an onward flight, then it is not unusual to encounter issues with traffic, plan for this accordingly and give yourself plenty of time, and by ‘plenty’ at least 2-3 hours extra.
The second most popular international airport is CEB (Mactan-Cebu). If you decide to take a liveaboard trip around the areas of Cebu, Negros or Bohol, then this would be your ideal airport to fly into. Transfers from CEB are also easy to organise, either by your holiday resort or your chosen liveaboard.
The third most popular international airport is CRK (Clark International Airport), which is located around 60lm north of Manila. It is sometimes referred to as Manila Airport. If you’re planning to take a liveaboard north of Manila, then this is your ideal airport to fly into.
