The SeaLife Micro 3.0 is a self-contained underwater camera built around a simple promise: pick it up, charge it, and dive with it. No housing to assemble, no O-rings to inspect or lubricate, no flood risk from a seal you forgot to check.

If you are a recreational diver who wants to start capturing what you see underwater without learning a new technical skill set before every dive, this camera is genuinely worth your attention.

What Makes This Camera Different

Most underwater cameras are standard cameras fitted inside a separate waterproof housing. The Micro 3.0 is different: the body itself is permanently sealed at the factory. There is no door, no battery compartment to open, no housing to flood.

That design removes the single biggest source of anxiety for divers using underwater cameras. You will never stand on a boat wondering whether you seated the O-ring correctly, because there is no O-ring to seat.

The trade-off is that you cannot swap batteries in the field. The internal 2000 mAh lithium-ion cell charges via USB and is rated for 3-plus hours of video or 1,000-plus images on a single charge. For most single-day dive trips, that is enough. For liveaboards or back-to-back diving days, plan your charging around your surface intervals.

Image and Video Quality

The Micro 3.0 uses a Sony 16MP IMX083 CMOS sensor at 1/2.3 inches, the same sensor size you find in many serious compact cameras. At full resolution that gives you 4608 x 3456 pixels, with a range of aspect ratios and lower resolutions available if you want smaller file sizes.

Still images can be saved as JPEG or as RAW in Adobe DNG format. RAW capture matters if you edit your photos afterward: it preserves all the data the sensor captured, giving you far more latitude to correct color and exposure in software than a compressed JPEG allows.

Video tops out at 4K Ultra HD at 30 frames per second. For slow-motion work, 1080p at 120 fps gives you footage you can slow to one-quarter speed in editing. Files are saved as MPEG4 h.264 (.mp4), which plays on virtually every device and editing platform.

The lens is a fixed-focus 7-element fully multi-coated aspheric design with a 100-degree wide angle (equivalent to 19mm on a 35mm film camera) and an aperture of f/2.8. Fixed focus means there is no autofocus motor hunting in low light, but it also means you cannot selectively focus on a subject. Everything from 15 inches (38cm) to infinity is in focus at the same time, which suits wide-angle reef and wreck shooting well.

Color Correction Underwater

Water absorbs red and orange wavelengths quickly as you descend, which is why underwater photos often look blue or green without correction. The Micro 3.0 addresses this in two ways.

First, it has a set of scene modes that apply automatic color correction based on your environment:

• Dive – for deeper water, adds warm tones to compensate for blue shift.
• Snorkel – for shallow water or snorkeling, a lighter correction.
• UW Light – optimized for use when you have an underwater video light attached.

Second, it has three digital white balance filters you can select manually:

• UW Deep – for deeper tropical water with blue or cyan tones.
• UW Green – for colder water with a green or emerald cast.
• UW Shallow – for shallow tropical blue or cyan water.

Beyond those presets, you can set a manual white balance to dial in color correction for your exact depth and conditions. If you shoot in RAW, you can also correct white balance entirely in post-processing, which gives you the most flexibility of all.

Ease of Use Underwater

The Micro 3.0 uses three wide piano-key style buttons for its main controls. These are large enough to press reliably while wearing dive gloves, which matters more than it might seem when you are neutrally buoyant and trying to frame a shot.

An easy setup feature walks you through the right settings based on your shooting environment, depth, and whether you have a light attached. You do not need to memorize a menu structure before your first dive.

The LCD screen is 2.4 inches (61mm) at 260,000-pixel resolution. That is a readable size for a camera this compact, though bright sunlight on the surface will make any LCD harder to see.

Shutter response is rated at 0.1 seconds, which is fast enough to catch fish that are not actively fleeing. Continuous burst mode fires 10 full 16MP frames within the first second, useful for capturing a turtle or ray mid-movement.

Storage, Depth, and Other Practical Details

The camera has 64GB of internal solid-state storage. There is no memory card slot. 64GB holds a substantial number of images and hours of video, but once it is full, you need to offload files before you can shoot more.

Files transfer either over Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n, with an approximate range of 100 feet / 30m) using the free SeaLife Micro 3+ app, available for Android 6 and up or Apple iOS 12 and up, or by USB cable to a computer running Windows XP/7 and up or Mac OS 10.8 and up.

The camera is depth rated to 200 feet (60m), which covers the full recreational diving range and then some. It is also shock resistant to a 3-foot (1m) drop and fully rubber-armored.

Buoyancy is slightly negative at 1.8 oz (52g). The camera will sink slowly if you let go of it, so use the included wrist strap.

For altitude-based activities on the way to a dive destination, it is rated operational to 25,000 feet (7,600m) above sea level.

The Light Question

The Micro 3.0 has no built-in flash or video light. Natural light fades fast underwater, and color correction filters only go so far. If you plan to shoot at depth, in caverns, or inside wrecks, an external underwater video light is not optional, it is essential.

SeaLife sells the Micro 3.0 as a camera-only model and as bundled sets with either one Sea Dragon 3000F Auto light or two Sea Dragon 2500F lights. If you are buying the camera alone, factor the cost of lighting into your planning from the start.

Who This Camera Is and Is Not For

The Micro 3.0 is a strong fit if you want a capable, genuinely maintenance-free camera that covers everything from reef photography to 4K video without requiring you to learn housing assembly or O-ring care.

It is less suited to you if you regularly dive beyond 200 feet, need interchangeable lenses, or want optical zoom. The fixed-focus wide-angle lens is excellent for reef scenes and wide shots, but it is not designed for close-up macro work on small subjects like nudibranchs or tiny critters, where a dedicated macro lens or wet lens attachment would serve you better.

If you have outgrown entry-level cameras and want RAW capture, 4K video, manual controls, and a sealed body you never have to worry about flooding, the SeaLife Micro 3.0 sits in a genuinely useful spot in the underwater camera market.
