The SEAC Unica is a full-face snorkeling mask designed for surface snorkeling. Instead of a traditional mask-and-snorkel combination, it covers your entire face in one unit, letting you breathe through your nose and mouth naturally as you float and look down.

If you are new to snorkeling, or you have tried a traditional setup and found the mouthpiece uncomfortable, this style of mask is worth understanding before you decide.

How it works

With a conventional snorkel mask, you bite a rubber mouthpiece and breathe only through your mouth. Many people find that tiring or awkward, especially beginners.

The Unica removes that entirely. The mask seals around your face, and you breathe normally through both nose and mouth inside a small breathing chamber at the front.

SEAC uses a separate channel system for inhaled and exhaled air. The air you breathe in travels one route; the air you breathe out travels another. This separation is what prevents the lens from fogging, which is the most common complaint with full-face snorkel masks that use a simpler design.

Exhaled air is vented through a patented system that SEAC says makes the exhale feel effortless and eliminates the clicking or hissing sound that traditional purge valves produce.

The view

The lens is a single curved piece of polycarbonate, giving you a 180-degree field of vision. You can look forward, to the sides, and diagonally without the frame of a traditional two-window mask cutting into your sightline.

For watching fish and reef life while floating at the surface, that wide, unobstructed view is the main reason people choose this style over a conventional mask.

The snorkel and dry top

The snorkel tube is built into the top of the mask rather than clipped to the side. It includes a dry top valve, which is a mechanism that closes the tube opening when a wave washes over it or you dip your face deeper than usual. This keeps water out of the breathing chamber without you having to do anything.

It is worth being clear about what this does not do: the dry top helps at the surface, but the Unica is not designed for diving underwater. Full-face snorkel masks of this type are surface-only equipment. If you want to duck-dive down to get a closer look at something, a traditional mask and snorkel is the right tool.

Fit and build

The frame and lens are polycarbonate, a hard-wearing plastic that handles sun and saltwater well. The strap is detachable, which makes rinsing and drying easier after a session.

The mask is listed for adults. Getting the fit right matters more with a full-face design than with a traditional mask, because the seal runs all the way around your face. A poor fit means leaking, and there is no easy way to clear water from inside a full-face mask the way you can with a standard one.

The Unica is GoPro compatible, with a mount point for attaching an action camera if you want to record what you see.

Is this the right mask for you?

The Unica suits you well if you are snorkeling at the surface, want a comfortable breathing experience without a mouthpiece, and are happy staying on top of the water rather than diving below it.

It is not the right choice if you want to freedive, duck-dive regularly, or do any kind of breath-hold diving beneath the surface. For those activities, a low-volume traditional mask gives you the control and clearing ability you need.

It also requires an honest fit check before you commit. If the seal does not sit correctly against your face shape, no amount of strap adjustment will fix a leak.
