OM System Tough TG-7: Rugged Compact Camera Built for Underwater Photography

The OM System Tough TG-7 is a compact point-and-shoot camera sealed against water, dust, shock, and cold. It is built specifically to go where ordinary cameras cannot.

If you are a recreational diver or snorkeler who wants to bring a capable camera underwater without buying a separate housing for every dive, the TG-7 is one of the most serious options in this category.

Who This Camera Is For

This is not a beginner's holiday waterproof camera. It is not a professional mirrorless system either.

The TG-7 sits in a specific and genuinely useful middle ground: a compact camera with serious underwater features that you can carry on any dive without a case, down to 15 meters depth on its own. For most recreational diving and all snorkeling, that covers you completely.

If you regularly dive deeper than 15 meters and want to shoot at depth, OM System makes the PT-059 underwater housing (sold separately) that extends the rating to 45 meters, which covers the limits of recreational diving.

The sealed construction runs through the entire body, with a dual-lock mechanism on the battery cover. Dual-pane protective glass on the front lens also resists fogging when moving between temperature extremes, which matters when you surface from a cold dive into warm air.

The non-slip grip is a small but real detail. Wet hands and gloves are the normal condition underwater, and the TG-7 accounts for that.

The Lens and Image Sensor

The TG-7 uses an f/2.0 aperture at the wide end, which is genuinely fast for a sealed compact. A bright aperture lets you use faster shutter speeds in low-light conditions, including the blue-filtered light you get at depth, which reduces motion blur from fish or surge.

The 4x optical zoom covers a 25mm to 100mm equivalent focal range. At the wide end you have enough coverage for reef scenes and wide-angle shots. At the telephoto end, aperture narrows to f/4.9, so you will want good ambient light or to use the flash for telephoto macro work.

The image sensor is a 12-megapixel back-lit CMOS chip. The TruePic VIII processing engine is the same generation used in OM System's interchangeable-lens cameras, which is a meaningful detail: it handles noise reduction and color processing at a higher level than most cameras in this physical class.

The camera records RAW files (12-bit lossless compression) alongside JPEG, and you can edit RAW files in-camera or on a computer using the free OM Workspace software. For divers who want to correct the color shift that happens underwater in post-processing, this matters considerably.

Underwater Shooting Modes

Rather than leaving you to guess at settings while underwater with gloves on, the TG-7 has five dedicated underwater scene modes:

• Underwater Wide for reef overviews and wide scenes with good ambient light.
• Underwater Snapshot for quick shots of moving subjects where speed matters more than precision.
• Underwater Macro for close-up subjects like nudibranchs, small crustaceans, and coral detail.
• Underwater Microscope for extreme close-up work at depths, using the Variable Macro System.
• Underwater HDR for high-contrast scenes where you want detail in both bright and shadowed areas.

The camera also has three underwater white balance presets (Shallow, Mid-Range, Deep) that adjust automatically based on which mode you select, though manual adjustment is also available. Getting white balance right underwater is one of the biggest factors in whether your photos look natural or green-blue, so having dedicated presets is a practical advantage.

Macro: Where the TG-7 Genuinely Stands Apart

This is the area where the TG-7 goes well beyond what other waterproof compacts offer.

The Variable Macro System lets you shoot subjects as close as 1 centimeter from the lens edge, with a maximum image magnification of 7x (35mm equivalent). For scale, that means you can fill the frame with something the size of a grain of rice and resolve detail the naked eye cannot see.

The macro system includes four modes:

• Microscope Mode shoots at up to 7x magnification from 1cm distance, with optical zoom set to telephoto.
• Microscope Control Mode lets you switch between 1x, 2x, and 4x magnification with a single button press, and the rear LCD can display up to 44.4x magnification for composition.
• Focus Stacking Mode captures multiple shots at different focus positions and merges only the in-focus areas into one image. This solves the shallow depth-of-field problem that makes extreme macro shots frustrating. You can select between 3 and 10 shots.
• Focus Bracketing Mode captures up to 30 shots with shifting focus positions, giving you the raw material to create a stacked image later in OM Workspace.

If you dive specifically to photograph small marine life, this system is a serious reason to choose the TG-7 over alternatives.

Video

The TG-7 records video at 4K (3840 x 2160) up to 30fps, and Full HD up to 60fps. For slow-motion work, it can shoot at 120fps in Full HD, 240fps in HD, and 480fps in SD, each with a 20-second clip limit.

Vertical video is supported natively, so footage recorded in portrait orientation saves as a vertical file without needing post-processing rotation.

Time-lapse movie generation is built in: the camera shoots the interval sequence and automatically assembles the video file.

Pro Capture and Action Shooting

Pro Capture Mode starts buffering images 0.5 seconds before you fully press the shutter, then continues at 10fps after the press. This is particularly useful for unpredictable subjects like fish darting into frame, breaking wave surfaces, or anything where the decisive moment is hard to time precisely.

Sequential shooting reaches 20fps in high-speed mode, which is fast enough for most action underwater.

GPS and Sensors

The TG-7 has a built-in Field Sensor System that logs GPS coordinates (using GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and QZSS), compass direction, water temperature, depth, altitude, and acceleration data. This information embeds in your images and can be loaded into the OM Image Share smartphone app to map your dive route against the photos you took at each point.

For divers who like to document exactly where a species was found, or who want a log of conditions at the time of each shot, this is genuinely useful data rather than a gimmick.

Connectivity and Charging

Charging is via USB Type-C, directly into the camera body. No separate charger is required, which simplifies travel.

The camera connects to smartphones via Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n) and Bluetooth 4.2 for remote control and image transfer through the OI.Share app. The optional RM-WR1 wireless remote adds physical shutter control with IP57 splash protection.

Battery Life

Rated at approximately 330 still images per charge under standard testing, and around 50 minutes of continuous video recording (or up to 110 minutes when zoom and other functions are not actively used). For a day of diving across two or three tanks, carrying a spare battery or a power bank for mid-day USB charging is worth planning for.

What the TG-7 Is Not

The 12-megapixel sensor is capable, but the small 1/2.33-inch chip size means image quality in very low light will not match a larger-sensor camera in a dedicated underwater housing. If you are a serious underwater photographer who shoots wrecks at depth in poor visibility and expects gallery-quality results, a housed mirrorless or DSLR system will serve you better.

The TG-7 also does not replace a dive computer or any safety equipment. The depth sensor logs data for photography records, not for decompression planning.

In Summary

The TG-7 is the right camera if you want something you can clip to your BCD, take on every dive without fuss, and still get genuinely impressive results, especially in macro. Its combination of a fast f/2.0 lens, RAW recording, five dedicated underwater modes, and a macro system that reaches 7x magnification puts it in a different category from typical waterproof compacts.
