Scuba Schools International has released a rebuilt version of its Enriched Air Nitrox specialty, one of the most widely taken continuing-education courses in diving. The update restructures the course around defined lessons and, for the lower of its two certification levels, moves the entire academic portion online including the final exam.
The programme still runs at two levels, Enriched Air Nitrox 32 and Enriched Air Nitrox 40, with an upgrade path between them. Students taking Nitrox 32 can now complete all of the theory digitally. Certification still requires instructor approval.
What has changed
- A clearer, lesson-based format with defined learning objectives
- Updated content covering nitrox fundamentals, gas management and safe diving practices
- Closer integration between student and instructor materials
- Fully digital learning and examination for Nitrox 32
- Stronger links between the theory and how nitrox is actually used on a dive
Enriched Air Nitrox remains one of the most valuable and versatile certifications a diver can earn. This update modernizes the learning experience while ensuring students develop a stronger understanding of the benefits, limitations, and safe use of Nitrox in real-world diving.

Why it matters for dive centres
Nitrox is a knowledge-based specialty, meaning it can be completed without in-water training, though SSI continues to recommend application dives where possible. That makes it straightforward for centres to attach to Open Water packages, continuing-education pathways and advanced programmes.
The revised course is available worldwide and in multiple languages through the SSI Total Teaching System.
