Egypt is world-famous for its diving, but visitors shouldn’t overlook the incredible snorkeling available here as well. From shallow reefs bursting with color to calm lagoons perfect for beginners, the Red Sea has something for everyone.

Snorkeling in Egypt isn’t just a side activity to diving—it’s a full-on adventure in its own right. This guide will cover the best snorkeling spots in Egypt, along with practical tips to make sure you have a safe and unforgettable experience.

What makes snorkeling in Egypt so good?

First—what makes snorkeling in Egypt so good? Snorkeling in the Red Sea is world-class thanks to its extraordinary clarity, vibrant reefs, and abundant marine life. The region is famous for its crystal-clear waters, often with visibility stretching 100 feet (30 m) or more, allowing snorkelers to take in every detail of the colorful corals and schools of fish below.

And, unlike in many places where the best views require a boat trip, in Egypt you can often step right off the beach and into a kaleidoscope of marine life. Because the Red Sea is warm year-round, it’s comfortable to spend long stretches in the water exploring these ecosystems.

The coral reefs here are some of the healthiest and most diverse in the world. Brilliant hard and soft corals form underwater gardens teeming with reef fish, from clouds of orange anthias to flashes of wrasse, damselfish, and bannerfish. Sea turtles and dolphins are also common.

Accessibility is another huge draw. Resorts along the Egyptian coast—from Sharm El Sheikh and Dahab in the north to Hurghada and Marsa Alam further south—are designed with snorkelers in mind. Many offer house reefs right off their jetties, while nearby excursions whisk you out to legendary sites like Ras Mohammed National Park.

Sharm is Egypt’s snorkeling capital. Many resorts sit directly on house reefs, so you can step off the jetty and be surrounded by parrotfish, butterflyfish, and even the occasional reef shark. Ras Mohammed National Park is a must, with its kaleidoscope of corals.

Hurghada

Hurghada’s long coastline is dotted with sandy beaches and offshore reefs. It’s great for families and beginners thanks to the calm lagoons. Day trips take you to Giftun Island, famous for its turquoise waters and playful dolphins.

Marsa Alam

Whether you’re a first-timer with a mask and fins or an experienced ocean lover, Egypt’s Red Sea delivers a stellar snorkeling experience.

If you dream of swimming with turtles or even dugongs, Marsa Alam is the place. Abu Dabbab Bay has seagrass meadows where these gentle giants feed. The reefs here are less crowded than Sharm, giving you a wilder feel.

Dahab

And, unlike in many places where the best views require a boat trip, in Egypt you can often step right off the beach and into a kaleidoscope of marine life.

A relaxed town on the Sinai Peninsula with a bohemian vibe, Dahab has shore access to some of the Red Sea’s best reefs. The Blue Hole is famous with divers, but the surrounding shallows are fantastic for snorkeling, with big schools of fish right below the surface.

El Quseir

This lesser-known spot offers pristine reefs with fewer tourists. It’s ideal if you want to escape the crowds and still enjoy spectacular coral gardens.

What to Consider When Snorkeling in Egypt

  • Sun protection: The Red Sea sun is strong. A rash guard or reef-safe sunscreen is essential.
  • Entry points: Many reefs drop off sharply, so use resort jetties or guided trips for easy access.
  • Currents: Most spots are calm, but some areas can have strong drift—always check conditions locally.
  • Respect marine life: Don’t touch the corals or chase turtles. The reefs are fragile, and wildlife thrives best when left undisturbed.
  • Gear: Bring your own mask and snorkel for comfort, though rentals are widely available.

Why Snorkeling in Egypt Stands Out

Few places in the world offer reefs this vibrant just meters from shore. The visibility often stretches past 100 feet (30 m), making it easy to spot everything from clownfish to moray eels. Add in year-round warm water and affordable resorts, and it’s clear why Egypt keeps pulling snorkelers back.
