16 Best Yoga Mats in 2023

Yoga Mat

If you are into yoga, you know that the right yoga mat can either make or break your yoga experience.

A mat that is so thin that your bones are touching the floor or so slippery that your hands are sliding in the down dog pose is no good. You become frustrated by attempting even the simplest yoga poses, and your flow, as a result, is completely messed up. The frustration then turns into anger and negative self-talk, which is the exact opposite of what yoga is about.

Being your personal source of zen and strength, a yoga mat should facilitate your advancement in the practice. It should make you want to experiment more and bring your yoga skills to the next level.

This can be done solely with a mat that has the right texture, thickness, and grip that positively influences your moves. Only then you will be able to focus on breathing, be present, and quite literally go with the flow.

While the more textured mat gives you a better grip, a mat with a substantial thickness provides you with the utmost comfort.

There is also a difference between a home mat and a traveling mat as well as the type of movements. Read about what thickness you should choose.

Furthermore, there are eco-conscious mats constructed from either recycled rubber or another type of natural material that offers good enough traction.

It makes sense to invest in a high-quality mat that will last you at least a few years, which is what we are aiming to help you with by creating this guide.

You will find mentioned here both high-end and budget-friendly options that are equally good bargains for the buck. Your task is to prioritize the features that are essential for you and choose accordingly.

The Top 7 Yoga Mats in 2023

All the Yoga Mats We've tested

Premium Quality

Manduka has earned its reputation as a quality yoga goods distributor – all of their apparel, mats, and props are made with care and designed to last (and last and last). More so than other leading brands, Manduka seems to really have yogis in mind when designing their products.

The Manduka PRO Mat is thick, with a substantial weight, making it a poor option for travel but a wonderful addition to any home studio. The plush thickness makes this mat a great option for those who have a more dynamic practice, or for those who need a little extra love on their joints. The grip is truly exceptional, though it may take some time to really break in.

Not only is this Manduka mat made with high quality, responsibly sourced materials, but they also stand behind their PRO products with a lifetime warranty. Their pricing can be a bit exclusionary (the PRO Mat rings in at $129), but we know these mats really last, making it a sound investment towards your daily yoga practice.

YOGO Ultralight Travel

You don’t need an expensive yoga mat to get the most out of your stretching and bending sessions – an affordable alternative will do the trick just as well. If anything, it won’t make you so overly-conscious about not getting any scratches or tears on your mat, which is stress relief in itself (this is what yoga is all about anyway, right?).

Meet the BalanceFrom GoYoga mat. Checking off all of the above mentioned boxes and more, it is that perfect at-home mat that will help you to get better at crow pose and give you the courage to attempt headstands. It is made from sustainable rubber received from the trees and doesn’t contain any harmful toxins.

You can spice up your yoga game with a cork type of mat from 2nd Wind. As expected, it is all-natural in addition to having a spiritual meaning behind the elephant print. An elephant is widely recognized as a symbol of tenacity and strength, which is reflected in the mat’s improved grip and a great level of durability. Its wet-resistance allows you to do yoga in the rain as cork tends to release suberin when it becomes wet.

This improves the quality of your poses due to the increased stickiness of the mat. None of the fluids will be absorbed by the mat – they will be repelled instead. You don’t need a specifically designed mat cleaner for it either, the rain will take care of it.

All you need to do is brush it with a hose or a wet cloth and hang to dry until the next yoga session. Cork fights bacteria and keeps your yoga mat fresh and clean for a long period of time.

You probably won’t take the REEHUT mat with you on vacation, but you will definitely carry it with you to the nearby yoga class. This yoga mat is indeed extra thick with its 12.7mm – the thickest on our list, to be exact. And it’s great news for beginners and those who prefer to have more than usual amount of padding when doing yoga or pilates.

No damp or cold ground will stand in the way of achieving those fitness goals you set out at the beginning of the year. Its anti-tearing technology allows you to utilize the mat for a long time, whereas its easy-to-clean surface minimizes the amount of maintenance you need to do. It will retain its original look regardless of how many stretching practices you decide to fit into your busy weekly schedule.

The two different textured surfaces are further backed by the slip-resistance – there’s no way you will do any harm to your joints even if you pick the tough route to attain your body goals. The mat is approved by PAHs, REACH, RoHS and 6P, thus giving you peace of mind that there are no toxic materials involved.

You have the power to regain your balance while doing yoga poses with a mat like the Indigena designed by prAna. A non-flimsy mat like this has a grippy surface that keeps you still through your entire yoga practice. It provides just enough cushioning without going overboard and still offering you maximum comfort and stability.

This great yoga mat is constructed from a biodegradable rubber, meaning that it is not toxic and as eco-friendly as it gets. The stretching in three directions is restricted, which gives you additional steadiness when those yoga flows get tricky. Tall folks are not excluded either – the substantial dimensions of the mat allow you to lay in savasana without having to keep one of your legs or hands on the bare ground.

In spite of the seemingly low thickness of 4mm, you get significant support that doesn’t limit your moves in any way. What’s more – you will find yourself using it for years before it starts shredding.

Yoga Mat Buyer’s Guide

Before choosing a Yoga mat it’s important to understand the different types and features. That way you make sure to choose one that is ideal for your particular yoga practices.

For example, did you know that closed-cell yoga mats are not ideal for hot yoga?

Thickness

A standard yoga mat is about 3 mm (1/8 of an inch) thick. The most common yoga mat thickness types are:

  • 12 mm (1/2 of an inch) extra thick yoga mats ideal for sensitive joints
  • 6 mm (1/4 of an inch) thick yoga mat good to protect sensitive joints
  • 3 mm (1/8 of an inch) is the most common and good for versatile practices
  • 1-2 mm (1/16 of an inch) are very thin but great for travel

Material

The yoga mat material determines its lifespan, grip, how easy it is to clean and how eco-friendly and recyclable it is.

The most common materials are:

  • PVC Yoga Mats
  • TPE Yoga Mats
  • NBR Yoga Mats
  • Natural Rubber Yoga Mats
  • Cork Yoga Mats
  • Cotton & Hemp Yoga Mats
  • Jute Yoga Mats

PVC mats are the most common Yoga Mats. No wonder, since the material gives a long lifespan, is cheap, easy to clean and provides good grip in most cases. As great as that sounds, Vinyl is a harmful material that is bad for the environment as it is not recyclable.

TPE Yoga Mats just like PVC are chemically-heavy but can be recycled. TPE is a synthetic material that combines the qualities of rubber and plastic mats – great for yogis allergic to rubber or latex. However, the mats tend to be more slippery since they usually have a closed-cell structure.

NBR mats are made from recyclable Nitrile butadiene rubber – a non-toxic synthetic rubber material. The rubber gives the mats water-resistant qualities making them easy to clean and durable. NBR mats are good for less demanding yoga poses as they tend to be thicker, 10mm or more, and lose grip when wet.

Natural Rubber Yoga Mats are an environmentally friendly alternative to PVC and synthetic mats. They are made of non-toxic, biodegradable materials and tend to have a long lifespan. The mats provide a good grip, although they may slightly lose grip when wet, and a moderate level of cushioning. The main downside is the weight and the rubber smell, which fortunately fades with time.

Cork yoga mats are made from eco-friendly material that is renewable, biodegradable, and naturally resistant to bacteria. These mats are particularly popular for their exceptional grip, which even improves when the surface is wet. However, due to its absorbent nature, cork yoga mats may be more difficult to clean. Makes sure you don’t opt for cheaper options as they tend to chip and flake.

Cotton & Hemp Yoga Mats are both eco-friendly and recyclable. The main benefits are the easy cleaning (you can throw them in the washing machine), the lightweight and the materials are naturally absorbent making them great for sweaty yoga. The downside is that the materials make the mats less grippy and they tend to slide on smooth surfaces.

Jute Yoga Mats are made from the most eco-friendly material. Jute is made from an incredibly fast growing plant that is renewable, requires minimal care, and is grown without the use of pesticides. These mats are suitable for any type of yoga practice. They are durable, lightweight, and resistant to bacteria. The texture of jute may not suit everyone as it has a distinct scratchy feel.

Yoga Mats Rolled Up

Size

There is no official standard size for a yoga mat, but the most common size is around 180cm long and 65cm wide (70×25 inches). However, individuals with broader shoulders or who are taller may prefer to use an extra-large or extra-wide mat, which is usually around 200x80cm (79×31 inches). If you prefer more space during yoga classes, consider investing in an extra-large mat to ensure you have enough room to move comfortably.

Cell Type

Yoga mats can be broadly classified into two types: those with an open-cell structure and those with a closed-cell structure.

Mats with an open-cell structure are designed to absorb liquids, such as sweat, like a sponge. On the other hand, closed-cell mats are designed to repel liquids and prevent them from seeping into the core of the mat.

Although open-cell mats may prevent a buildup of sweat on the surface and give a better grip, they are more prone to bacteria growth due to their design and it’s better to clean them frequently. Additionally, they take longer to dry after being washed.

Closed-cell mats, on the other hand, are less prone to bacteria growth and are easy to clean. They can be wiped down and dry quickly as they do not absorb liquids into the core. However, due to the smooth surface, the mats tend to give less grip and can be slippery if liquids accumulate on the surface.

The different mat types are used for different yoga practices:

Open-Cell Yoga Mats: Hot Yoga to avoid a slippery surface and Yoga Poses that require good grip

Closed-Cell Yoga Mats: Easy ‘no-sweat’ yoga and stretching that requires minimum grip

Weight

A standard yoga mat is usually around 1,5-2 kg (3-4,5 lbs). These mats are  generally around 3 mm thick. Choose a heavier yoga mat if you want a premium mat that you won’t carry around too much. However, a lightweight yoga mat is a better choice for carrying to classes and traveling.

The four most common yoga mat weights are:

  • +3kg for extra thick yoga mats
  • 2-3kg are generally thick yoga mats
  • 1-2kg standard yoga mat
  • 1kg or below are usually very thin yoga mats

The material and thickness will determine the weight of your yoga mat. The ultra thin (1-2 mm) travel yoga mats weigh normally 1kg or less, while some premium PVC, Rubber and Cork mats are the heaviest, at 3-4kg. However, the weight of yoga mats made from these heavier materials will also depend on the thickness of the mat.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What mat should I choose to fit my yoga style?

With dozens of yoga styles practiced within yoga studios, exotic retreats and at home, there can hardly be a one-size-fits-all mat for them all. Rather, the yoga equipment manufacturers continue to come out with advanced mats that incorporate high-tech features you didn’t know you needed. How do you know which mat to opt for then? This will ultimately depend on the style of yoga you practice.

Vinyasa style, for instance, involves a lot of movement, which means that you will need a mat with a good grip. Since you will be constantly moving your hands and feet in different directions, you need a non-slip mat that will not budge from your sweat drops and ruin your flow. This also implies that the mat should have at least some level of water-resistance to keep the wetness at bay.

Hot yoga classes, in comparison to Vinyasa, are known for being some of the most intensive practices that call for a few specifics when it comes to choosing the right mat. Here you will be soaking in sweat as opposed to developing just a few traces of it, which means that you should go for a closed-cell type of a mat with a supreme level of water-resistance. This construction kind won’t let the stinky odor absorb into your mat and it will last you a lot longer.

Yin yoga or restorative styles of yoga are not as demanding as the other two simply because they do not entail a lot of movement. They are considered to be on the low-intensity side of the spectrum as you are most likely to spend most of the time in a seated or lying positions. For this reason, mats with 6 mm of thickness and more are ideal for this style of yoga. You want to have as much cushioning as possible so that your poses are enjoyable.

Do I opt for the thin or thick yoga mat?

Your choice of the yoga mat has to be primarily dependent on your style of yoga. If you have already established that you will be mostly executing high-intensity movements, then a thin yoga mat is your best bet. It provides you with the closeness to the ground and allows you to feel more stabilized. If, however, you will not be moving a lot but rather meditating and restoring your inner energy source, a thick mat would suit you best. You should also keep in mind that the more cushioning the mat has, the more condescending it is to your joints. And, in case you are new to yoga and have not trained your knees to develop resilience, you might want to opt for a medium to thick type of mat.

From what material should my yoga mat be made?

Yoga constitutes a part of the green movement, which caused many companies to create yoga equipment that would be aligned with yogis’ core values. That said, not every mat out there is made from eco-friendly materials. When it comes to cheaper mats from unknown brands, manufacturers tend to save up on high-quality materials and go with the cheap Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) material. While it does provide nice traction and a good cushioning, it is full of toxins that don’t offer many benefits in the long run. So, if you are on a budget and cannot invest in an environmentally-conscious yoga mat, make sure to purchase a mat that at the very least is going to last you many years. This way you will be able to minimize the amount of waste you produce and contribute to a cleaner planet. In case your budget does allow for a more high-end mat, keep on reading.

One of the PVC alternatives that is worth your attention is the rubberized mat. Made from a naturally harvested rubber, this type of mat is 99% free of latex. This is definitely good news for those with latex allergies. Although yoga mats constructed from rubber are generally recognized as eco-friendly mats, it is found that the excess harvesting can result in deforestation. This is why some renowned brands like prAna and Manduka have committed to using solely the non-Amazonian rubber that would not be diverging with the main reason for creating ‘green’ products.

The other option is the Polymer Environmental Resin (PER) that is basically a version of PVC but with no harmful toxins. This material is recyclable, which is what we are expecting from a yoga mat. The Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) is also recyclable material that is often incorporated in popular yoga mats. You should note, however, that although these materials are recyclable, it is your job to actually take measures and recycle your mat once it is done serving you.

Finally, cotton and cork had to make it to our list as they are the eco-conscious materials that are becoming more and more relevant for obvious reasons. While cotton is a biodegradable material that still has some form of environmental impact, cork beats it with its easy cleaning and easily disposable properties that cotton doesn’t have. Due to cotton often being dyed with toxic colorants and not offering much traction and comfort, it cannot be considered to be an optimum option for many yogis. Cork, in contrast, provides a sufficient amount of grip and comfort while being completely natural.

How often should a yoga mat be replaced?

A yoga mat should be replaced every 6 to 12 months to avoid harming your yoga practice and, most importantly, your health. However, your yoga mat’s lifespan will depend on factors like its quality, the intensity of your sessions, and how often you use it.

If you are wondering if it is time to replace your yoga mat, you should look for specific signs. These include uneven padding, reduced support and thickness, lack of grip, and a funny smell.

How do I choose the right yoga mat?

Once you determine all your deal makers and deal breakers, it is time to make the decision as to what yoga mat to purchase. To make this choice easier for yourself, you might want to try the mat out first. This can either mean going to the store and feeling it with your bare hands or borrowing one or two from your yoga teachers or friends. The first option will give you a good understanding of how online descriptions compare to the real-life products, while the second option will give you the opportunity to test the mat and see what works for you. Remember that the right yoga mat will help you to feel grounded, stable and comfortable. It will make your poses flowier, your progress faster, and your spirits higher.

How often should a yoga mat be cleaned?

A good habit is to clean your yoga mat quickly after every session. The primary purpose is to remove sweat and avoid the creation of a friendly environment for bacteria. Moreover, we suggest you deeply clean your yoga mat at least once a month. For this task, you could use a wet cloth and some neutral soap or opt for some products specifically designed for yoga mats. However, as a good rule of thumb,  always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines when you clean your yoga mat!
